Furuba (Fruits Basket)... What do you think?

The show focuses on the 12 animals of the Chinese Zodiac... But it really has nothing to do with astrology or any of that cosmic mumbo jumbo... What's your take on this?
Is it pure modern fantasy, or does it have a deeper meaning?

I absolutely LOVE Fruits Basket! I own the second and third volume, and am eagerly anticipating purchasing the fourth. Its blend of cuteness and excellent quality of animation with very believable characters you can easily identify with make it one of my favorite animes.
However, I have not watched the last volume yet, so I'm not sure how much I can comment on the Zodiac thing. So far, to me it looks more like innocent fun, as well as a plot device to deepen character relationships and personalities and heighten the theme of being an outsider or not fitting in, which is one of the main themes in the series.
I wouldn't worry about it if I were you,AzuFan. Have fun and enjoy a wonderful anime series.

Yeah.. I own volumes 1-3 too... And I do agree, the whole Juunishi thing is just a plot device...

Watched the whole anime series, really really nice! I think I raved about this in another thread, but it's one of the rare animes that I actually enjoyed. The ending was also nothing short of "whoa"--even if it ended quite "open" since the manga hasn't ended....

*Spoiler - if you consider quotes a spoiler*
Yes that link goes to Gypsy's review of the Fruits Basket series, and after reading that I decided to buy the series (I have all the DVDs now).
I love the series, it is so funny! And well some of the characters are a little perverted *cough* Shigure *cough* it's usually just little one liners that are for the most part harmless. If you guys don't have the 4th DVD you are really missing out because that has one of the funniest episodes on it (#23) it is where you meet the monkey. One of the best lines from that episode: "I just wanted cereal!!! But now I've imposed on you for THREE WHOLE DAYS!!!" Although his "*sniff* please God send a bolt of lightening to strike me down." Is good too. (I haven't seen the episode for a while so I don't think that is
exactly what is said but I can't remember!!!)
I think my favorite character is Kyou in the series. Yuki just looks
too much like a girl for me to handle.
Who is everyone else's favorite character?

I think out of all of them ... uh ... it's a three way toss up between Shigure, Kyo, and Momiji. I love Tohru too! This is too hard! Shigure made me laugh the most (especially when he's picking on his editor). Out of all of them, I think I liked Tohru the best. And put me down as preferring the Tohru - Kyo coupling.

My favorite character is Tohru. I agree with Gypsy, Shigure is a riot, probably the funniest character in the series. I also like Kisa.
As for who Tohru should end up with--that's a tough one. It's so easy to identify with almost all the characters on some level--I feel for both Kyo and Yuki and would like to see either one end up with Tohru.

WAAAH!! A furuba thread! Yay!
Yosha!
*ahem* Anyways, I've been a fan of Fruits Basket since it came out I believe it was August of 2001. (yeah, I like to grab fansubs ^^). Ever since I saw it, I was WOW'ed!
Momiji is my all-time favorite, but I adore Tohru. She's such an inspiration! ^^; For me, however, I'm not for any sort of coupling. I used to moderate the furuba.com AND the now-dead furuba.org forums... but... I've left due to too many hormone-raging yaoi fans that have taken over the board...
Coupling everyone is just cliche. People fail to see the real meaning of FB, and maybe I'm just taking it too seriously... but I adore the overtones of this anime. The manga gets a bit darker later on the series (I own all of the currently published japanese manga, even though I can't read a drop of it
) ... but it doesn't really focus on "Who ends up with Tohru"...
*sighs*
Sorry for my blunt opinion, but that's how I feel. ~_~ I just kinda wish people would over look that and see FB for what it really is about... and that's different for everybody else, but for me, it's about opening up and realizing the good in things that you have either been brought up not to see, or just are ignorant in noticing.

St. Peter wrote:It's Yuki. He's so... feminine! It took even me, a seasoned anime sexer (no you pervert, a person who determines a character's sex) a while to figure out he's a guy. And yes, the anime cyberculture is sprinkled on every corner with henyaori perverts.
Seen up to episode 3 now. Tohru has humongous eyes.
LOL! Y'know, same here!
I mean I was just taken aback when Tohru mentioned that Yuki was the PRINCE... and I was all like "what the...?"
But either way, it's upsetting to me that people do that non-canon stuff.
I mean there are PLENTY of feminine-looking men out there (IRL too!!), but it does NOT mean they're gay... or meant for gay coupling. *grr*
And it's not just with Yuki. There are tons of other yaoi-yuri stuff going around. There are TONS of people out there that swear there is something going on between Hana-chan, Uo-chan and Tohru-kun...
Oi. And of course Hatsuharu.
Trust me, it gets better after where you are. I adore this series very much and I wouldn't highly recommend it if I didn't appreciate it! Heck, I wouldn't have made a shrine to it if I didn't like it! ^^]loooove[/i] yaoi and hentai and all that other junk.
(<-- that's drooling? Looks like he's puking to me! O.o) So they're not good company to keep... and thus why I feel that it IS true that when you keep bad company, you tend to fall to sin VERY easily. Not that I started to like that stuff, but I started to become less affected by them liking/talking about that stuff.
So... here I am! ^^;
St. Peter ... by the end of watching all of FB, you'll either love Tohru to pieces, or hate her guts. Trust me.
Another conflicting thing I'm dealing with... well, I very much support waiting on the act of love-making until
AFTER marriage... since then you save yourself for that one man/woman, plus there's an actual
commitment made between God and yourselves. And well, not to spoil, but... the author has slipped into that zone and it's bugging me.
*sighs* Where I had once appreciated this anime for it's cleanliness... it seems to have diminished, and it's rather upsetting. So please pray that it won't get worse than this... because it's just fueling those perverted fans out there that write up nasty doujinshi's.

Oh, I agree with you, lin. I'm not into all the coupling up characters that some seem to enjoy. I'm more into enjoying the characters for who they are--they have such engaging and captivating personalities--and watching them grow, develop, and discover more about themselves and those around them. Plus, it's so easy to identify with almost all the characters and what they might be going through on some level.
That's one of the things that makes Fruits Basket such an incredible anime!
By the way, I visited your site. Loved it, but the description of what my personality should be like based on my Zodiac animal is WAY off base. Usually those descriptions are so general that something fits, but almost everything in there was the opposite or at least pretty far away from what my personality is really like. Only a couple things fit, and they were in the minority.

YAY! Somebody else who agrees with me!
Thank you for understanding!!
They DO have captivating personalities -- all different in many ways, yet the SAME in others (if you think hard about it!) I'm all for the philisophical side of Fruits Basket, not the coupledom.
THAT is why I love this anime/manga!!!! I could sooo relate to a few of them, mostly Tohru... well, I explain that in my "about me" section of
my page. ^^]

Ugh. All zodiacs/horoscopes are SO sadly
VAGUE that it's sickening how some people live by those.
*rolls eyes* I just put it up as an "extra" since somebody suggested it. But as my disclaimer states, I
do not believe nor do I follow those things.
I think they're silly and vague and just plain ridiculous!
Yeah, they're fun to read, but don't use them as some sort of bible!!!
Yeeesh... some people, y'know?

Heh, I have to agree with you. That particular smilie has always confused me.
Well since I am the one hosting 'Anti Yaoi Fangirls' I guess my stance on this subject is pretty obvious.
Actually, in general I never read FanFiction, because quite a lot of it is badly written/stupid (my personal pet peeve is when the autor writes themself in the story as "another animal of the zodiac or something like that!
), and I don't have time to wade through tons of stories looking for the few good ones out there.
I especially find yaoi stories about cannon characters annoying! Don't these authors realize that by making the character's Yaoi they are completely throwing away a portion of the character's personality? To me it is the same as for example making Kyo start talking and acting like Momiji! It just doesn't make sense!
Fruits Basket is my favorite anime, but I'm not exactly sure why. :rolls_eye I think it is because I enjoy the humor, and (I agree with SpiritSword) there is always at least
one character I can identify with. I really, really wish they would bring out more episodes of the anime. Unfortunately that doesn't seem like it is going to happen.

I love Furuba! I think Tohru is a great role model because she gives great advice to all the individual people who need help, and she inspires them. But my favorite characters are Yuki and Hatori.
I've read up to ninth manga, and seen all the DVDs they released in the US, but i've been wondering if anyone knows if they're going to make a second season of Furuba.

I've never read the manga, but I've seen eps 1-22 of the anime. My favorite character is probably Kyo (or Kyou), but I like pretty much all of them.

I love how everyone's saying
"Oh I LOVE Fruits Basket! BEST anime ever! .... though I've only seen the first 2 volumes
.... "
Be prepared for it to go 180. My anime club just finished off the last 2 episodes tonight.
Even though throughout the series you see little foreshadowing and hints at it's ending, the style kinda came as a shocker.
But overal, it was enjoyable.
Enjoy.

I really like Fruits basket! It's pretty funny and for once there is a girl who doesn't style her hair the same way every day! (Think about it, in most anime shows the girls wear the same hair style day in and day out. Tohru's changes every once in a while!) I like Kyou and Haru best! (Tohru's cool too!)

I agree it was startling (I only very recently finished it off), but it was definitely not completely unexpected either. The preceding episodes, while primarily light, always had that touch of menace hinting at a darker side, while yet the conclusion was IMHO fully in keeping with the series' overall feel and flow. That kind of clever contrast speaks well for the general plot and writing in my estimation, too.

I haven't read the manga but I have heard the same thing. That Kureno is always with Aktio. Maybe they decided that the cast was too big already for the anime, or maybe it is that as far as I know Kureno never seems to do anything of significence...

In the Anime they also introduced monkey boy and Hiro before they came in the Manga, I guess they just wanted to make it more interesting.

HI Destiny, I love your Pacifica avatar. I haven't seen that one before.
But, back to FB. It is one of my favorite anime. It's just so sweet. The end is a 180 tone, but it's needed I think to wrap up the show better. I hope they have a second series out, because I've heard a lot of rumors that they will have one. I'd definitely watch it and enjoy it as much as the first one, I'm sure. I think Tohru is one of the best female anime characters out there. She is always looking for the best in people and I really admire that about her character and the writer of the manga who thought this series through.

They MUST make another season!!!!!! I have read up until the 12th manga, and the story is TOO GOOD for them not to make more episodes!!

^_^ Hello! Thanks for the compliment, I made it myself! ^_^ Okay, The 1st season kinda leaves you hanging because the manga keeps going. In jan. I think they are bringing the Manga over here. But as for the second season...sorry, but it's false. They pretty much desided it wasn't a big enough hit and that they arn't going to be doing a second season.
