GitS: Stand Alone Complex

I'm not a HUGE sci-fi fan, but something about the song Inner Universe is attracting me to watch this! Anyhow, I noticed my video rental got in Stand Alone, and I was wondering if it's a good show for a rent. I haven't seen ANY Ghost in the Shell stuff, and I think they stuck the orginal movie on another shelf cause I can't find it. Should I rent the orginal movie first, or just start off with the TV?

There are two threads on ghost in the shell, check at the botton of this page.
I think it looks cool BTW.

Yes I keep forgetting to use the search button >_< Probably cause I'm used to old mbs where they got mad at you for bumping topics, and yet sometimes got mad at you for makign another topic on the same thing!

Either way, it's more of a "should I watch the movie first before this" and so on question, but still.

No, you definitely don't have to watch the movie before you watch the show.

I agree, the music is great. I finished watching the second disc of the series and have truly enjoyed it. It's very much like a "stand alone" cop series ~_^. And, some very interesting plots. It is defintely worth a rent, Tenshi.

Yes, isn't Origa (the singer of Inner Universe) just something else? She sings the OP song of GITS:SAC 2nd Gig, "Rise," as well (which, btw, happens to have a fantastic opening video. Confound it, I want a leather trench coat). Great thanks to Yoko Kanno for the awesome composition and Origa for her unearthly (and somewhat disembodied) voice. Very appropriate for GITS.

I think you don't necessarily have to watch the first movie if you're already essentially familiar with cyborgs and/or cybernetics. The first few episodes of the series pretty much gives you a rehash of the characters and some of the salient points of "cyborgization" in case you haven't watched the first movie, or in case you've forgotten it. I've watched the whole series and I've gotten my hands on GITS:SAC 2nd Gig already; it's most definitely worth it. I don't think I've seen an anime series so well-constructed as GITS: SAC. And the reference of "The Laughing/Smiling Man" to two of J.D. Salinger's works (the novel "Catcher in the Rye" and the short story "The Laughing Man," which I have both read) was just marvelously dead on to the series' over-arching theme of "standing-alone" in the age of cybernetics, which would be elaborated in the last episode. So, yes, I'm telling you to watch it. XDDD

Is GitS: Stand Alone Complex going to run on CN this fall?

I thought it was.

Like a couple have said, there's no need to watch the movie first. The TV series stands by itself. I would also add that you may NOT want to watch the movie. I'm not saying it's bad, but it does show violence and nudity and carries a much deserved 16+ rating. The TV show (so far) does not have those elements and is quite good, IMHO.

That's what all the magazines were saying. Maybe they decided to hold it back long enough for the DVDs to rack up some sales?

I just went and did a search on ANN. This was posted on 06-30-2004.

[quote]Cartoon Network has announced the premiere of several anime]

But I haven't seen any ad on CN for Stand Alone Complex as of yet. At one point they showed that ROD OVA was going to be showed on Novermber 6 too.

Except that ROD was on last night, grouped together like one movie I might add.

Yep. I think ANN has a plot to make all anime fans go crazy sometimes.

The only thing that I can think of why it may not being showed right now is, because of the DVD problems that were dealing for GITS. But that is a long shot of a reason.

It is good to hear Ghost in the Shell is coming to CN. It is one of my favorite animes.

Had you seen Vol. 2? There you had such things as a rape scene visible in the reflection of some scoundrel's sunglasses from his computer with audibility (although it did serve to demonstrate what a loathsome jackal the man is; he can watch such abominable crimes shamelessly while being interrogated about the Laughing Man). Also, on the third episode of the DVD was bloodstained at times. This isn't to say though, that I would ecourage people to not watch either.
