Saw a trailer for it a while ago but never got around to seeing it. Any good? Worth buying?

Sex/violence/language?

Suitability for non-anime fans?

Would just love to hear your views.

If you are talking about the first movie, then I'd say it was pretty good, but not the best. Still worth buying though. Really awesome animation in the beginning and around the end. There is alot of swearing, but is nothing compaired to the F word inflated, AppleSeed. I don't recall any blood or gore, and there's no nudity or sex. The violence just about only mecha upon mecha, bashing it out. For non-Anime fans, well, they might like it, but possibly not. Really depends on the person. You'll just have to see it for yourself sometime. ;)

The first two movies are excellent, and definately worth seeing. I really wouldn't bother with the third (Patlabor WXII) though. I've heard good things about the series, but have never seen it.

I heard okay things about it, though I haven't seen it yet. You may need to check some different sites for a reviews (B/c CAA doesn't have one that I see).

Thank you for commenting, Zero One. :thumb: I assume that you've seen Gundam 0080? Man, that was a good one... I think yours is pretty cool too.

BACK ONTO SUBJECT:
I noticed that on the video transfer of the first Patlabor movie that sometimes it wasn't very smooth and the frames seem to have this slow fade giving a slight choppy effect. I don't know if this is the result of the way it was made, or a crappy transfer. but anyways, it's still awesome. ;)

i've seen the first 18 or so episodes of the tv series. I immediately sold it. Old animation[i don't like that style, robotech was pushing it for me], the characters were idiots in a nonfunny way, and in the last episode there is a girl on girl crush, nothing physical or sexual, but more than idol worship. i am biased because i didn't like the series tho...

I LOVE PATLABOR.

The opinions seem luke warm at best so far, so let me say that I am a huge fan of the series. Allow me to shed some light.

First of all, this series is like no other. Yes, it has mechs, and yes they bash each other, but it's not your typical gundam or macross title. It's more like a cop drama than a mech bashing series. The TV episodes and the OVA's follow a police unit's lives similar to CSI or Law and Order, only the police pilot large mecha called labors (patlabor = patrol + labor) and primarily investigate labor related crimes. There's a great mix of story telling - from drama to comedy to inter personal relationships and such.

The movies are completely different. For the most part, they follow detective who is not associated with the TV series police unit except that they work out of the same precinct. The patlabors are mainly just secondary characters in the movies. They hardly even have a part in the final movie WXIII - Wasted 13.

If you are interested in this excellent series, I recommend getting the first OVA series (called the "Original Series") to try it out. It's worth it.

I've only seen WXII (which I liked, even if it doesn't have much to do with Patlabor), but I'd love to see the actual searies sometime. It sounds very interesting

I too love this series and the first two movies. I've only seen about the first 6-8 eps. or so of the series though.

I think the best description of the movies is to compare them to a Japanese Tom Clancey. It's great stuff but has a slower pace, much like a Tom Clancey movie.

I've yet to get these on DVD, and I think my VHS copies from cable are about shot (if I didn't accidentially write over them), so I'm going to need to track them down.

WXIII was alright, once you got past the fact that it's not really a Patlabor movie, they really should have dropped the name from the title all together.

There are some religious themes in the movies, but nothing too messed up, mostly some quotes from the bible, nothing too far out of wack. Cussing is fairly minor, but they do "take the Lord's name in vain" a few times.

The original characters are a trip, each has it's own personality... really great stuff (thought obviously not for everyone ;) )
