I think that my aunt would like Spirited Away but...

...she says that she doesn't want to "watch that Speed Racer crap."

I really think that she'd enjoy Spirited Away, but how do I convince her that not all Anime is like Speed Racer with the mouths that move after they're done talking and the poor animation?

Some advice would really be appreciated!

I cannot bring myself to call Speed Racer an anime. Even though it may be one, it is one of the most pathetic, stupidest things I have ever seen.

The first thing you might want to ask her whether American cartoons have improved in animation quality over time. If she has seen any of them, she will probably say yes. Then just ask here whether it is reasonable to assume that the animation quality of Japanese animation has also improved over time. From there it is easy to show her that her reservations are unfounded.

And if that doesn't work, you can always remind her that should can't know until she's tried it. You might also want to mention that Spirited Away won an Oscar for best animated feature in 2003 ;) .

Do you have the DVD of it?

If so, maybe you could first just talk her into watching one of the numberous previews, the John Lassiter intro, or the special making-of program. If none of those wet her appetite, then well, I dunno.

I'm assuming from your description that she likes cartoons, just not anime. You could point out that Disney thought it was good enough to release here, and that it won several European animation awards.

it's too bad your aunt is like that... Spirited Away is such a great movie. Try Esoteric's suggestions. They sound good. You could also try having your mother/father/uncle recommend it to her if they've seen it.

LOL! I had the same problem with my parents at first. And Dad still calls anime and my drawings "Sailor Moon stuff." :P

I suggest doing what I did. Just start watching it. If your grandmother's like my parents, she'll come sit and watch a little with you out of curiosity. And if she likes it, she'll stay. That's what happened when I watched Princess Mononoke for the first time. :) In that way, you'll be able to not only explain to her that there are different forms of anime, you'll be showing her, too. ;)

I think, you should just watch it with her! The animation in "Spirited Away" is absolutely amazing, so you have nothing to worry about! ^v^

Yeah she does like cartoons, she likes Spongebob and Cinderella and stuff. Thanks so much for the advice! ^_^

My mom and dad like it, so they can help me recommend it to her.

I think she'll like it also because she loves Night Gallery and all that bizarre, spooky otherworldly stuff. :P

Hmm. It's too bad people sterotype it...

Hmm....maybe you could tell her about how Miyazaki is known for being a great animator, and a little of the history of his stuff. That might interest her.

They considered it a Alice in Wonderland wannabe.

hey! I'm a grown up and I love anime! :P Well....numbers wise...XD If you've been to an anime convention, you wouldn't've said what you did. ;) Unless by adult you meant "normal" ones. :P

I know a few grown ups who like anime - there's a few lurking around here.

Just remember that you can't force it on her. She may well like the movie (and I can't see why she wouldn't given she likes cartoons), but people are less likely to like things they feel were force upon them. Her heart seems obviously closed to even the thought of anime. You may just have to be patient.

Tell her its really good and Disney is the one who it sells under here. Tell her the art is like that. (not supporting disney in any way though, dont get mad at me!)

Is there a movie you aunt likes that don't? Why not agree to watch that movie if she'll watch yours?

Well she just came over and didn't really care much that it'd won awards. She joked that she'd only watch it if I tied her down and tortured her...

Does anybody have any cool pictures I can show her? I'm getting desperate here...

Just remember that if she chooses not to watch it, then it is her loss, not yours. Some people are just too narrow-minded to appreciate new and different things.

I only hope that you have as much fervor for sharing the gospel as you do for sharing your anime collection ;) .

True cbwing0, but she cuts on Anime in front of me, to kind of tease me about it (she's not trying to be mean though), but I don't think she knows that I don't like that too much...she's a Christian so she wouldn't do anything to purposely irritate me, but it does get sort of annoying, you know?

Well she saw some of Wolf's Rain and didn't think it was that bad, so that's a start, I guess... :eh:
