I'm talking old-school, pre-1990 stuff. This is 1989 and BEFORE.
We're talking Kimba, Astro Boy (60s or 80s, take your pick), Princess Knight, Cities of Gold, Belle & Sebastian, Little Prince, Honey-Honey (not to be confused with Candy-Candy ><; ), original Transformers and manymany others.
Anyone else around here have a favorite old-school title?
Or am I THAT "Old"? ^_~
(BTW- I will pay handsomely (as possible) for a tape of the "Honey-Honey" movie. Anyone know where I can find it???)

Urusei Yatsura!
I think Maison Ikkoku qualifies too, since that's 1986; and, naturally, Macross (so, by extension, Robotech and its component series).

I'd absolutely love to through a plug for Bubblegum Crisis. The series that made me fall in love with anime.
Then there's Castle of Cagliostro, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Laputa: Castle in the Sky, many, many more.
But it was Bubblegum Crisis that taught me what anime was (I had already seen Speed Racer, Battle of the Planets, and Robotech, but I didn't know what they were). I've never been the same since.

I grew up on Astro Boy, Gigantor, Amazing Three and Kimba back in the 60s and 70s. I would have to say though that my fav Pre 90s titles would be Maison Ikkoku and Kimagure Orange Road.

Akira (1988) is definately one of the classics.

Yes, I forgot about Lupin. Only some of his stuff is appealing, though (I don't care for the ones oozing with innuendo, which unfortunately was the rule rather than the exception).

Yeah, I watched a little of the TV series and didn't like where it was taking me. Cagliostro remains a top pick for me, though.
I like all of the Rumiko Takahashi comedies. It's interesting to see her writing mature through her major series - Urusei Yatsura to Maison Ikkoku to Ranme 1/2 to Inu Yasha. They all follow a similar path.
A cookie to anyone who knows where the wealthiest woman in Japan got her start.

Voltron. It was my frist anime that I ever saw, when I didn't know it was anime or that it was from Japan.

If the wealthiest woman in Japan is Miss Takashike (sp?) then her first successful manga was Urusei Yatsura, rather under-rated an unpopular as it seems.

Transformers and Voltron.
and I know this wasn't as early as others, but The Botz Masters was an excellent show in my opinion. I don't know if it was Japanese anime or not, but I liked itl.

Ah talking about the old anime Doraemon is my favorite.

Ooo, Voltron. That was the first anime I ever watched, though I didn't know what it was.
The English version in the States is mondo-bowdlerized, though, but this isn't surprising since it *is* in the generation of other let's-make-it-up-as-we-go-along dubs like, well, Robotech.

How could I forget Capitan Harlock.
Does anyone remember, Little Nemo - Adventures in Slumberland (movie). I love that movie.
Edit: I forgot one that I use to watch all the time on Nick Jr., Noozles or Blinky the Wonderful Koala.

Dude. I remember them.
Ah the good old days when all Nickelodeon could afford to air was re-packaged anime. ^^
Actually, I'm not sure "Noozles" WAS an anime. It certainly wasn't American, but I'm tempted to say that it and "The Adventures of the Little Koala" were Australian in origin by Japanese in production.
Random historical note: See, in the 70s/80s it was cheaper to actually MAKE the cartoon overseas in Japan. That's why a lot of "American" cartoons like "Rainbow Brite", "MLP", and several Hanna-Barbera titles have a distinctly Anime flavor to them.
That is all. ^^;

Wow! Now we're talking the stuff that got me interested in anime before I knew it was anime. After seeing Cities of Gold, Ulysses 31, and Battle of the Planets I was always on the look out for 'that cool new type of cartoon'.
I think I have a vague recollection of some other anime type cartoon from when I was younger, but I can't place it. Something Robotech-ish I think.
Anyway, woohoo for classic anime!!!

Was it something about robot lions joining together to make a super-mecha? If so, that was Voltron, most likely.

Nope, not Voltron. I have no clue - it's a vague, vague recollection!
Wait! I'm remembering volcanoes! And big beasts.
I feel like I'm in therapy!

Little Nemo was ANIME!?
No wonder I love anime so much now. Nemo was pretty much my favorite movie when I was growing up. It still rocks. I really should see it again sometime soon. (Did Miyizaki work on Little Nemo?)

It was *partially* anime (according to the 'Cyclopedia, it was a combined USA/Japanese production -- Chris Columbus, director of the first Harry Potter outing, even wrote part of the eventual screenplay).
Hayao Miyazaki was actually involved in its production early on, but he was *fired* when he had creative disagreements with the project directors over design. The Encyclopedia notes that his version of Little Nemo "might well have been vastly superior if he had only been allowed to complete it."

Ooh classics! Well, Robotech of course. I also like Maison Ikkoku quite a lot. Superbook is a classic now as well. Oh! And I suppose that Nadia - Secret of the Blue Water would count as well since it was made in '89.
Anyone else remember Grimm's Fairy Tales and 'Lil Bts from Nickelodeon? Those were excellent anime and I'd love for them to be put on dvd someday ... *wistful sigh*
