Newtype USA

This isn't anime per se, but it's so strongly related I thought I'd post it in this forum.

Does anyone else subscribe to Newtype USA and if so, what do you think?

In my opinion it's the best anime magazine available in English (of course one might argue that Newtype is the best anime magazine in any language, as it does pretty well over in Japan too). It doesn't just review DVD's now available in the US that one could've already rented, it includes tons of info on new series not yet commercially released in the US like Wolf's Rain and Last Exile, plus new series in Japan as well. And it still has some pretty good reviews of anime available over here in the states. Plus you get a ton of extras in every issue, like a free DVD (generally one episode but occasionally 2 or 3 of different series), poster, centerfold, postcards, etc. And the 2-page art spreads in the articles are great!

I guess the only drawback for some people might be the price, as it's more expensive than your run-of-the-mill anime magazine. But for my $ it's well worth it.

(No, ADV films didn't send me free DVD's for this post...I did win a DVD in one of their contests, though!)

I bought two of magazines of NTUSA. I want to subscribe to it, but it's 140$ per year since I live in Canada

Yeah, the cost is my major barrier to entry as well (I reserve my money for more important things such as food, shelter and the next Ranma 1/2 box set). I pick up interesting issues piecemeal when I run across them.

:wow!: Yikes! Poor Canucks... (Canuck...is that word even used anymore?)

It comes out to a more manageable $90/year here in the US. Still one of the priciest magazines out there, but again, if you can afford it it's worth it in my opinion. What did you think of the issues you tried?

The first one was awsome! It the one of February 2003. Mainly on RahXephon :thumb:
But I've been tricked for the second one: It was writen on the cover: "First look on the Live Action Evangelion" And there was like only one page :shady: And the rest of the issue was most on Transformers :eyebrow:
Anyway, I missed the one on Wolf's Rain :waah!: Could someone tell me what month it was?

Okay, there wasn't one single issue that covered Wolf's Rain in depth, unfortunately. There were several shorter articles spread across several issues. Issues 1 and 4 of this year have 2-pagers, and issue 6 has a 4-pager that talks about character interactions. I think you already bought issue 2 of this year--I think that one has an article on Bones with some info on Wolf's Rain.

Ah, Newtype. Yes, I love Newtype USA! Sadly, like everyone else has already mentioned, the price is a major barrier. I went to Border's last night and picked up the newest Newtype, and had to put it back because I can't afford to dish out $10 (I don't have a job this summer...). However, I do have a subscription to Animerica. While not as in depth, it's still great. I wish it came with a free dvd, though...

The only place you can get Newtype in the UK is a shop in Oriental City, London. Might be able to order online too.

NewType is currently my fav anime mag. Though it costs $90 per year, which is why I just buy em when I have money lol XD But, the free dvd & manga excerpts, and everything else in em makes up for the fact that they're sooo expensive lol.

That's strange...while their mailing schedule isn't exactly regular (I'll get some issues on the 20th of the previous month and others on the 2nd of the actual month), I got my first issue right away. I know that the August issue has been out since around the 1st of the month, so if you already got the T-shirt I'm surprised you didn't get the issue. I hope it gets to you soon. I enjoyed this particular issue, so it should be worth the wait. If it doesn't get there soon, I'd E-Mail or call them or something.

The manga insert is Full Metal Panic...well, WAS Full Metal Panic. Last month was the last installment of that series. They'll start something new next month but at this point it hasn't been revealed.

I think Newtype USA is a pretty good magazine, but if you sit it next to its same-month japanese counterpart, it's not realyl the same mag.

Mind you, there's reason for some of the differences, like the language, the ads (regional sellers don't usually advertise on both mags), and as I found out recently - the primary underwriter - ADV.

Just look at the number of ads in the mag. then do the math... does it seem that a plurality (not necessarily a majority) of the ads and much of the anime titles articled are ADV titles?

Also, look at the titles featured on the front/back covers... is there one non-ADV title featured?

Well, I'm not slamming ADV or NewType USA for that observation. Just something you should know, before you think that the USA 'counterpart' of NewType is a separate, non-anime company-related organization, to keep your minds in the right perspective.

I basically qualify NewType USA as an "ADV-Weighted" magazine, and disagree with the no-brain people that have recently been telling me it's a glorified ADV Mag-vertisement.

Oh yeah, look carefully at the little NewType USA ad at the beginning of each DVD... look at the visible condition of the original ADV mag and then look at the USA version (after the Magical Transformation Sequence or MTS)... see something different?

Just my 3 yen. :2)

Yeah, I noticed the ADV sponsorship. Doesn't bother me too much though. But I have picked up a Japanese Newtype before and yes, there is a difference. Problem is, I can't read Japanese, and for my money beautiful pictures aren't quite enough. ;)

Hehe, I know what you're talking about there, spiritsword, and I also am not that bothered by the ADV peppering of the mag. I just hope I can get proficient enough with reading nihongo that I *can* get a japanese NewType and enjoy all the extra content! ;2)
