favorite ghibli films/works
hey, after checking the list of all the ghibli works, i realized that there is a lot that i haven't seen. What are your personal fav's? Maybe you could post a quick summary and maybe why you liked it or something like that?

I know i have said it before in various places and at various times but Grave of the Fireflies is a must see, but be sure you follow it up with somthing happy or you will feel like this 
Totoro just wasn't worth the time of my life i spent on it and the Bath scene
(see review in the review section) just made the experience worse
Castle in the sky, Spirited away, and Kiki's delivery service are all good and are worth seeing a few times
My favorite was probably... spirited awway but Grave of the Fireflies is the one that was done the best.

Spirited Away. Definitely.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. Hmm... The review also said this was just normal in Japan... It's normal for families to bathe together, particularly when the children are so young. Besides, I don't think that scene is even in the American version, because it was released by Warner Brothers and, well that's pretty self-explanitory. I thought Totoro was great. I don't expect many to agree with me, though... It's so subdued and a bit slow. A lot of people just won't get it.

I like My Neighbor Totoro.... maybe not as much as some of the other films, but it was a good film.
I got DVD copy of all places in the 5.88 bin at Walmarts... and it includes the bath scene (not sure if they cut any of it out). Since I had already read the review and knew about baths in Japan, it didn't really faze me.

The Bath scene was indeed in the american version, But I don't see why you'd hate the film because of it? You got to realise that this cartoon takes place in the 1940's and well it was ok to bath with your children and when you share the bath together you save water. I don't think the film should be bashed because of it.

I've thought all of the Ghibli movies are very well done and the content is not too objectionable. I never thought twice the apparently infamous bath scene of Totoro, but now that it's been discussed, I can see why it may cause some discomfort. I thought it was a very good movie, though. My favorites are Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, Spirited Away, and Laputa: Castle in the Sky.

This didn't bother me at all. I had no forewarning, but I was still undisturbed by it. There's nothing sensual, incestuous, or fanservice-y about it. Atleast, it never struck me as any of those things. IMHO, it was just there for a) realism b) to show the strength of the family ties.

pretty much all of them but whisper of the heart is definitely on the top of my list. i love that story its so sweet. but besides that one i'd say mononke cuz it was my 1st ghibli film and then i also really like porco rosso. all of his films r so good! iv seen all of them at least 5 times each

sorry for double posting guys but being a ghibli fan i had to say this...Nadia is not NOT done by miyazaki!!!!!
anyways and to all the talk about the bath scene its japanese culture and u shouldnt be offended by it. in stead of being offended or freaked out try and study up on other country's culture and u mite learn something.

Yeah, Grave of the Fireflies is good. It's really sad, but still good. (And it does leave you depressed in the end-- so, ye be warned.)

Well I seem to have gotten a bit of flac about my comment on the totoro Bath scene...
Well I am sure it is fine in the cultural context, but the fact is that this film, unless i am wrong, is aimed at a rather young audience. I understand the cultuaral differences but american children probably will not. If I had kids I would not want them seeing totoro because of this fact. bottom line is that this scene is fine if you understand the cultural background, but quite alarming If you don't. I personally think it probably should have been excluded from the english version for this reason.
Also That scene was not the only reason why I was'nt thrilled with totoro. It's plot was nothing special and Even with out the Bath scene, I canot think of any reason why I would watch it for a second time. I found that cat bus rather annoying, ect.

My fave is Spirited Away, simply because I got to see it at the theater, which makes the whole experience really special. But I also love Grave of the Fireflies, Princess Mononoke, Kiki's Delivery Service.

That's why Studio Ghibli once recommended that Grave of the Fireflies and Totoro be watched together. Both are very good films, but Grave is very sad while Totoro is very light and up-lifting.
That makes them a good pair.

i actually really enjoyed ki ki's delivery service and made all my friends watch it too. I know it's a really little kidish kinda girlly movie, but there was something about it that was very innocent and honestly entertaining while still very well done as a movie.

I haven't seen Totoro, so no bath comments from me. I'm not sure which Ghibli film is my favorite. Princess Mononke was the first one I was, but Spirited Away was the first one I saw in theaters (3 times actually, a personal record). On the other hand, I like Castle of Cagliostro because it's so fast and action packed, but on the OTHER other hand GRave of the Fireflies is very powerful...
I also haven't seen Nausica yet. I was really looking forward to the upcoming Disney DVD release, too bad they pushed it back to coencide wit Howl's Moving Castle.

In case you're interested, it's actual name is Porco Rosso. It was slated for an 8/31 release here in the US, but the Nazi Mouse, in it's infinite wisdom has pushed back the release date to early next year.
