Why do you watch Anime?

Why do you watch anime? That a simple but tricky question... I've been thinking about it, I don't really know why (I think too much when I go to sleep  ).
I found out that the reason why I watch it is because there's things in anime that you don't find anywhere else. They have the more inventive and original stories and there's so much different drawing styles that everyone can find what there searching for.
and also, unlike a lot of Hollywood movies, there's no American power, in that case, Japan power.

Well now that I've found why I watch anime, I wanted to know other ppls reason.

I watch anime one, because I find it to be far more engaging and sustaining (entertainment-wise, certainly not spiritually) than anything american tv can offer. Contrary to popular belief, there are titles out there cleaner than the typical sitcom nowadays. The stories are creative, inventive, and presented in an aesthetically pleasing way. What more can you ask for?
Plus, I can really relate to characters a lot better. They're mostly teenagers/young adults, but even then, they are rarely shallow. Instead they are multi-faced, complex, layered individuals, not static characters. That goes far in my book.

The art, animation, and style. Plus the story-telling ^^ Though I do go back to western cartoons for more relaxing entertainment. (me love Courage the Cowardly Dog, )

I like anime because of the great art, the story lines for sure, and the episodes most of the time last longer than 5 minutes w/ commercial breaks included. It's nice to have a show that can get you to think and you don't see too many emotional shows/films very often in america. The explosions and humour add a nice touch to it also.

I share some of these people's reasons, but I always watch partially because of the action style. I like the art of creating fight scenes, and I appreciate what is generally done in anime (then again, not always).

But that's a side reason. I suppose the main reason is that anime often manages to merge good action with strong characters. Often it feels as though you have to go to one extreme or the other, and I don't really like either.

I watch it cause I just really enjoy it. Shows like Pokemon and Yu-Gi-Oh are more than just child anime, but they help boost your self-esteem if you really think about it. I feel myself almost acting like one of the characters sometimes. :)

Y'know, this really isn't helping our goal of telling people that anime doesn't make you a psycho porn-loving killer.

I don't really consider myself a big fan of too many anime series; I just like the anime style of drawing. As with anything else, I tend to be rather choosy about what I watch. But the reason I watch Hamtaro and Sailor Moon is simple: I get a good laugh out of them. (Actually, as anyone who has frequented Anime Angels would know, my interest in anime started with The Bush Baby.)

Does that qualify as a valid explanation? ^_~

err... back to the topic.

I watch anime because thes story telling is very diffrent, yet you can realate to it. The destruction is incretable (somtimes), the characters are very realistic. I love the religion/spiritual situations in it too. Its very cool how people get those ideas. The plots, the action, the suspence. Or the horror, drama, romance. BTW I can't stand 'Loony Toons'... (no morals what-so-ever) rather watch Tokyo Pig.

This is something i wondered myself. while it is true i love anime... how much do i love it???

Look at my special aspects of anime viewing. In the states it is like a hobbie... how else will you really get it. it is different, not mainstream.

if i was in Japan i would watch some... but, its just another tv show there... i am sure i wouldn't be as big into it. or not as many titles as i am here.

i like how anime shows///manga stays in its own "universe" better... what bothered me with american comics was all the crossovers... man, that made me mad. haveing to buy almost every different title just to get the whole story.

also stories are cool cause you can do more and "cooler" things in an animated show than one with live actors. (atleast for the time... stuff is getting better... go "Matrix.")

Okay, here goes...

The first, more cut and dry, reason I like anime are the great characters in anime series. They have much more depth than characters in most American series (live or animated), and although they are animated I can often identify with them on at least some level. And as others have already stated, the plots and storylines in anime are almost always deeper and better developed than those in any American programs.

And I agree, WhiteBlaze, the way anime series build on a plot throughout a 26-episode (or in some cases longer) series gives so much more room for development and really is appealing to me. I love to be left hanging and eagerly anticipating the next episode, trying to figure out what might happen next. I personally prefer anime series to one-shot anime movies for this reason.

The final reason I like anime is less cut and dry, and perhaps a little hard to explain. I could just say I love the art style and visual appeal and leave it at that, but it's something more than that. The visual characteristics of anime resonate with me somehow on a physical level. Now before anyone goes getting weird ideas, let me explain. I think my physical brain is very attuned to spatial input. I've always enjoyed the crisper, cleaner, sharper (more geometric?) lines of anime to the softer, less angular lines of older American animation. But I've always preferred animation of just about any kind to live programs of just about any kind for as long as I can remember. I never used to like programs like "The Great Space Coaster", live kids' shows with puppets. I wanted to watch cartoons. And when I first saw the style of Voltron I just about went crazy. It's the same way when I draw, I do better with things like buildings or mecha than people because they have more angular, geometric lines. I also liked geometry a LOT better than algebra in school--go figure. And with anime specifically, I like the art style of newer shows like CLAMP series or Slayers better than 80's anime with its generally softer lines, for example Macross/Robotech (the original series). So that's my long-winded way of saying that I think I have an actual biological propensity toward anime because of the way my brain is wired.

One thing I forgot:
In live movies, you see the same actors in different roles. Let's take Harnold as an exemple.
One time, he's a robot and the other he's a guy who's pregnant.... :eyebrow:
While in anime, you don't have that kind of problems :thumb:

Although occasionally you'll hear a voice of an actor that'll drive you crazy because you can't figure out who it belongs to...LOL

I largely started watching anime because there were so few good Science fiction or Fantasy shows on TV (the last one I really liked was B5). But yeah, the plots in anime are often better and the charcters are generally more interesting.

Yep it is like asking why don't apple jacks taste like apples. Well almost all my freinds that know that I watch anime don't understand why I do or why I like everything Japan. I really freak my freinds out when I talk about anime. Their like dude what the heck are you saying. But I watch anime because It's cool and they have more intelligence and good plots and storys then the latest american action flik. Anime is just cool I can't explain it. Once I got into anime I just can't watch anything else. It's like american moives and Tv shows seem so boring compared to anime. I can't understand why I like anime like I do. It's just like alot more intelligent and realistic and deals with stuff that like if it were in any american cartoon it would be boring. I don't get it. Ahhhhh!!! I can't really say why I like anime. I Just do. This is a real trick question!

I don't exactly find the majority of anime thought provoking, but I'd rather say . . . creatively stimulating. I absolutely love the art styles of anime, and it inspires me to make stuff of my own. Often times, I find myself watching something and I start focusing on the art and totally miss what's going on in the story. However, I do find the originality of the anime genre as a whole fascinating.

I certainly agree that most anime isn't very thought provoking. Then again, a lot of contemporary cinema isn't either (at least not what seems to be played in most mainstream movie houses). As in many things, the old maxim that "90% pf everything is crap" seems to apply. It's those bits of gold in the dross that make it all worthwhile though. Pieces like "Wings of Honneamise" or "Grave of the Fireflies" (I think) deserve to be included in the ranks of serious, quality cinema. Interestingly, as far as Japan goes anime is one of the few bright spots in that nation's film industry (the days of luminaries like Akira Kurosawa are sadly, long gone).

Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of anime that I watch can best be described as light entertatinment. At least it's more interesting than most American sit-coms (I think the last one that I felt was any good was "Night Court").

a couple of reasons, i guess i'll just list them :)

1. Themes (this is actually a big one for me, and themes make you think)
2. Nice storyline (depending on which one of course)
3. Good drawing
4. Creative
5. Great music (theme songs and most importantly, background music)

6. it's like watching a movie
7. Nothing much good to watch on tv in terms of series

basically, anime is worth watching.

I watch anime for the entertainment, the story, the character development, and the most important part the music.

I've always been the imaginative type, and enjoyed seeing things that were out of the norm. Anime really filled my aesthetic and imaginative needs.

Honestyl, for the art mostly. I think that the most beautiful feature on a person is their eyes. With anime they do a good job of exaggerating this.
