The realism in this movie is nothing short of amazing. I agree that this is one of the best anime movies that I have seen, but be ready for an emotional cyclone. You come to love the characters and by the end it makes it that much harder with what they go through, yet I don't think that the director's point was entirely to show suffering, because I think he could have easily made it even more sad and depressing. Brilliant war piece, and in some ways more real than non-anime war films I have seen

very good review. It is a excellent movie but I kinda view it as I viewed the passion, very bittersweet. I like dit yet I didnt like it.

I saw that a few years ago. Nothing short of unforgettable and impacting.

The charachters are amazingly real. they seem more real than most charachters in Movies with live actors.

this is a movie that all anime fans should see, but once you see it, I dought that you will want to see it again any time soon.

Edit, over a year later: This was my first post outside of the roleplay forum. I just thought I would make it known to anyone who happens to be reading this long dead thread.

That is very true... This is one you will watch once, or maybe show to friends. It's incredible, but much too sad for multiple viewings... I cry every time I hear "No place like home" now... This was the first anime I purchased... Watch it subbed, it is much better... The voice of the little girl is attrocious in the dub, but the Japanese voice was actually played by a little girl about the right age...

BTW, the ages of the characters are 14 (seita) and 4 (setsuko.) It says it right in the Japanese trailer, if you've seen the official DVDs. Setsuko, if you do the math, knew only war because she was born about the time of Pearl Harbor, so she was born right into World War II... Some of it was literal (it was partially an autobiography, though some details like Seita's death clearly didn't happen) but some of it was symbolic, and I think Setsuko's age was one of those things...

Two words: Excellent movie. Although I just saw it this summer, it is now on my list of favorite movies. In fact, it may be the best animated film I have ever seen, not because of its animation (which shows its time, although I did like it a lot) but because of its realism and the story it tells.

And yes, I actually cried at the end (which I rarely ever do in a movie), so bonus points to it for that .

Just a bit of a heads up for any one who might watch this movie: It is, as everyone else has said, exquistie and throughly realistic. But I just want to give warning to our more sensitive members that you may be severely depressed by this movie. I came away from this movie feeling completely crushed, and the feeling didn't lift for quite some time. So, in closing, it's a good movie if you can handle it.

I bought this movie on subbed video on a whim. Although I didn't cry by the end of film, I felt my heart sink in sorrow for the main characters. I have also watched it more than once and each time I catch something that happens to the Seita and Setsuko that makes me empathize with them more. I can't wait to buy the collector's edition DVD.

Yeah... movies like this make you walk the line between hope for humanity and the deep despair of reality.

Just finished watching it. 11:30 pm in the night and I'm crying like a baby. At first I wasn't even aware of it. Then I had to keep wiping away the tears quickly with my palms so no one would see, because no one has ever seen my cry for years. Beautiful. The way the movie made little symbolisms and nuances here and there to draw the audience's empathy was just incredible. On the onset of Setsuko's sickness and everything else that followed, the only thought in my mind was "Please make it stop." No doubt the most moving anime...heck, film, most definitely...I have ever seen and will see for a very long time. I'll have to muster enough courage to watch it again. Just incredible. I cannot believe it took me this long to finally wactch it.
