The only thing I can think of are anime music videos, like On Your Mark and CLAMP in Wonderland. I think that's about as close as you're gunna get :/ Maybe Japan just doesn't like musical numbers in their cartoons as much as we do :/ (And yet, I like it A LOT better that way!)

You mean where people burst into orchestrated song at any given time? I caught an anime series on TV the other day and one of the characters did just that...I don't know what the show was called, though.

I don't know about any movies, but the Hamtaro series tends to do that on a regular basis.

There was a live action Maison Ikkoku movie that was a musical where the characters broke into song throughout it. Needless to say, it tanked.

Sakura wars had several musical routines and a full operatic sequence in it... kinda the closest thing that I can think of right now.

Yes there are,
the only one I have seen though is Interstella 5555, which has no dialoge, and is only 60 mins long. Its also known as the Daft Punk movie, because the French electronic duo joined up with its director and wrote an album specifically for it.
Its about a rock band from another planet which is kiddnapped to earth to become the next big thing. And the music is the Daft Punk album, Discovery, which has Harder, Faster , Stronger, and One more time, and automatic love etc
Its a great watch if you can get you're hands on it, I highly recommend it if you like daft punk that is.

The original Bubblegum Crisis comes about as close as I can think of. There's a lot of music through out the series, but the music is not used to advance the plot/develop characters as in a true musical.

Hamtaro...
"Swirlie round and round we go,
Swirlie high, and swirlie low!
See the colors skip and flow!
Twirlie round we go!"
*eye twitches*
Heh. I like Hamtaro though. Don't get the wrong idea.

Now that you mentioned it, I remembered reading an article a couple years back about a musical production of Inu Yasha in Japan. So I did a search and came up with this information for you.
I love the poster...Inu Yasha and the Terminator, "I'll be back!"

Hmm... Don't know of any anime movies that are musicals, but...
A few anime have musical counterparts (on stage, that is) Sailormoon, for instance... Seera Myuu, as it's called, is quite popular... Mostly original songs, except for a few SM faves (particularly "La Soldier" from SMR)
Also, there is a musical video game... It's called "Rhapsody: *something something in the subtitle*" The greatest thing about Rhapsody, besides the really funny songs is the fact there are two audio tracks: English and Japanese. Of course, this game is so rare, you won't find it for less than a hundred dollars or so...
Hehehe, Adam Sessler rated it as one of the worst games ever... All the more reason for me to get this game someday...

Back to what Bobtheduck was saying on Sera myu. Sera Myu are the Sailor Moon musicals that started running in 1993 and are still running today. Most of them summarize the anime seasons. However they do add their own twists them. For example, the musical based on R had Sailor Moon in her Eternal Sailor Moon form already. Some musicals have unique plots of their own. Some even have AU plots by mixing different seasons Ideas to form original ones. Another thing is each music seems to have a "Kaiteban" or revision. Usually the revisions are just better versions of the originals but some turn out to be totally different from them. The music is poppy but is tasteful and a lot of the songs are pretty good and tolerable. These are live-action musicals so the we get to see dangerously minor special effects for the senshi's attacks such as light tricks, Reflection tricks, very minor explosions etc. The costumes look bulky but pretty and eloborate. And yes the actresses do wear wigs. One wonders how they can look at themselves the next morning but music and dance is an art form and thats how they express themselves. An interesting thing to note is the actresses age range in the 90's was usually in their early twenties to middle age now we are getting actresses that are only teens. The current one playing Sailor Moon is 16! All in all they are interesting some even worth watching. I've never seen one myself but I love the plots of them. If you want to watch one I heard the ones based on SuperS are the best!
Ps: Christiangirl I can pictures Inu-Yasha having musicals! Hehe...just teasing!
