It sounds to me like some of you are under the impression that the quality of the anime series would some hw matter to adult swim producers. I'm pretty sure the quality of the show is farthest from their minds, given the home-made CN show they have. Aqua Teen Hunger Force may actually be funny to the target audience, but it's animation quality is somewhat below poor.

From what I’ve seen of recent AS programming, the likes Maison Ikkoku is too high brow. I’d think they’d be more interested in Super Milk-chan or Mr. Stain on Junk Alley.

Oh, I'm well aware that technical excellence isn't even on the radar for Adult Swim, as long as they get the ratings. The problem, anime wise at least, is that they aren't going to GET those ratings WITHOUT paying more attention to such things. Consider: Adult Swim's biggest anime success story has been Cowboy Bebop, which still blows most TV animation out of the water (especially action oriented ones)

Agreed. Cowboy Bebop brought Adult Swim a lot of new viewers and it became their official introduction to "REAL" anime outside the "MON's" (Digimon, Pokemon, and Monster Rancher.)

Tossing the anime from AS would be like a car with a broken CD player. The car will still run, and you still have AM/FM radio, but it won't be the same.

Therein lies the fatal flaw in their reasoning. You can't really blame Adult Swim for wanting to stick to that formula, but they're clinging to the wrong part. It wasn't the genre or demographic appeal that made Cowboy Bebop a hit, it was the fact that the QUALITY was enough to grab the attention of non-anime viewers. Problem is, Bebop remains a real rarity in TV anime. While there have been plenty of shows before and sense that have used many of the same ingredients, few have had equal results. So, while Adult Swim can find plenty of shows with fighting and guns and spaceships, they're not getting the overall quality that won Bebop it's ratings. Alas, since this elusive "quality" is kind of hard to find, Adult Swim would have to cast a MUCH broader net genre wise to find more of it. This, of course, brings us back to the previous problem: Adult Swim won't risk departing from its established anime formula of action (and the occasional dash of comedy). In order to avoid the risk of LOOSING ratings, they've essentially limited themselves to shows that are incapable of GAINING them.

A loose/loose situation.

You can complain about AS programming or action anime or whatever all you want, but I still haven't seen you recommend a substitute genre that would actually work.

My point is that there isn't any "magic genre" that will draw in the masses. The shows that pull that off do so on their own individual strengths. Even if AS had a complete change in genre philosophy and started trying to cover more demographics, that alone wouldn't do anything unless they managed to snag the rights to a body of shows that can hold their own against the "normal" TV shows everywhere else. Their difficulty accomplishing that makes debates about which group of viewers their trying to reach kind of pointless (of course, AS is further handicapped by only getting to chose from what Japan gives them, and that's a whole different rant)

I think this has been brought up...but could it be the fact that they hardly even run commercials for anime, other than on the anime time slots? I mean...how are the comedy people gonna get interested if all they think anime is is Pokemon and Digimon?

I think many people associate anime with those two shows, which are definately oriented for children...:/

::is hugging his Patamon plushie:: I resent that statement!

Anyway, It's a rarity when I see and advertisement for an anime on Adult Swim, short of Shin-Chan. Once upon a time, AS used to air commericals for Bebop and Inuyasha non-stop...now, the only anime commercials I see on CN in general is Pokemon and Naruto.

I didn't say that was a BAD thing (I am HUGE fan of Digimon...>_> but let's face it a lot of people aren't...)

ANYWAYS. I know what you mean... is Pokemon doing well on CN? They are sure are advertising it like it is...

I think that it's obvious that CN airs commercials for stuff that is doing well... especially in the anime department.. I am pretty sure that Naruto is doing quite swimmingly...

That's a good question--last I checked, Pokemon was still being advertised on CN, and a new season is going to start this Summer (if memory serves). I think it's Diamond and Pearl or something...can't be too sure.

IMHO, Naruto is taking off almost like DBZ did, and from the bits and pieces I saw, it looks like it's taking off into another story ark.

Adult Swim has definitely been slacking on the promotional end of things where their anime has been concerned (and yes, it's been mentioned several times)

To be honest, though, I think we can make a bit too much of a deal about this, at least concerning the immediate situation. Keep in mind, there's not a lot of NEW anime to hype right now. Eureka Seven is almost over, and let's face it, it wasn't exactly a ratings smash. Bleach has been out for a few months now, so it's not going to be on the top of the list for hype at the moment. Blood+ WAS getting commercials around the premere, and it's only the past week or two that the ads have really slowed down. And then there's the VERY current return of Shin-Chan, which is getting a very healthy set of hype. ON top of that, Adult Swim has their little homegrown movie to hype up, and you can bet that gets first dibs on ad space.

Now, when ATHF The Movie finishes its theater run and there's STILL no anime ads, THAT'S when I'm going to start making a deal out of this.

THis may be a bit off topic, but keep in mind that when the Original Star Trek came out, it wasn't a ratings smash either. Now look where there at: 10 Movies (With one on the way) and 4 seasons later, it's still pretty darn popular!

Back on topic, I have a sinking feeling that, while Adult Swim may not be serious about getting rid of their Anime block, I definately sense a bit of "Play with their minds" aura around the last episode of Eureka Seven--short of timing, why else would they:

1. Play the opening theme when, in the original cut and on "The Fix", it wasn't played?

2. Cut about 2-5 minutes total from the beginning and end.

3. Leave the "One Year Later" card, and fade into credits?

This whole thing seems suspicious to me...

Eureka 7 isn't exactly Star Trek, Khaki. You're not going to see three additional seasons and 10 film adaptions.

Evangelion is only getting attention from the studios because the "Fans" refuse to be pleased with the finished product, so they keep cutting it again to try and satisfy them. The director got death threats after the end of the television run. Death threats! So he shot the film. Some people were still displeased. So now they're revisiting it, again, to rewrite the ending, again. Personally, I don't think their fans are worth it.

That was a bad example, Khaki.

You seem to miss the first part of what Khaki said. He said Star Trek was not a smash hit then but now it is. So it may be possible that Eureka 7 will become some smash hit one day. Khaki does know alot about Star Trek.

To be honest. That was not a bad example. I thought Evangelion would be some flop and look how it turned out in the US.

Khaki knows this kind of stuff a little more than you do it seems like.

Actually, there is a rumor that the Eureka 7 Franchise isn't over yet.. ^^; I mean I have heard that companies that have the name "Project" on them mean more than one series..

(Project Pikachu, Project Ghost in the Shell,) a just TWO that come to mind...

This was made by Project Eureka 7. (along with studio bones and all that jazz)

I doubt that it will have much to do with Eureka and Renton, but we could see more. ^_^v

Granted, both Star Trek and Eureka 7 may be/have been under the radar for the time, but the success of the one does not guarantee the success of the other, least not right away. Star Trek handles a vaster premise with a looser narrative. Each of those 10+ movies is it’s own story, possibly building on past seasons and movies, but for the most part self-contained if you’re familiar with the universe. Each episode deals with a different situation, with little that I saw in the way of over-arching plot. And not to mention it was live-action, an already well-established and readily-accepted format at the time. Anime, Eureka 7, is treading new ground, and it’s more story-oriented, a smaller, more compact universe. A second season? I haven’t been following E7, but would they have a story left to tell? I would have thought they’d have wrapped it up.

Premise-based anything will always have a better shot at sequels and continuations than their plot-oriented counterparts. This is why shows like Detective Conan can have hundreds of episodes and multiple movies, whereas Samurai Champloo has only 26 episodes, no feature film to it’s name, and likely no further adaptations.

A second season is possible, and it's been done before, but I wouldn't bank so highly on it for certain series like some do.
To be honest. That was not a bad example. I thought Evangelion would be some flop and look how it turned out in the US.

This would be where you miss my point, Keyblade. I said Eureka 7 isn’t so popular (or even necessarily vast for that matter) to merit further extensions of the series. Khaki countered with Evangelion, a series with a follow-up movie and, more recently, plans for a series reboot with 4 additional upcoming films and a new ending. The connection here being “If Evangelion, why not Eureka?â€

Are you sure? I'd heard the opposite: that "project" companies like that are founded specifically to fund the production of a single series (namely ones that are being shown on UHF rather than a network station or ones that don't have a pre-established franchise to pump the production full of cash)
