I don't know... I thought that was wierd too. Perhaps an edit? So far everything in Case Closed has been pretty easy to piece together, however,
I was confused by Harley's mention of Vodka and Gin. What/how much does he actually know?

I love Cased Closed/ Detective Conan.

I'm highly upset they restarted, but what can be done? Anyway, I was looking it up- there are well over 300 episodes and, like, twelve seasons?!?

i heard there were like 300+ episodes, but when i actually research it i could only find that there are 162 episodes (around 7 seasons???) and like 7 movies. But it's an awesome series though. I sometimes get frustrated that Detective Moore gets all the credit :( . But at least we know he can change back. And has does anyone besides me think that the man in black (the skinny blonde one) that poisned jimmy looks kinda like the detective from the west side of town that is alway in competition w/ Jimmy ( forgot his name)?

AngelSakura: I love Case Closed, as I've said before, but it's amazing the kind of damage FUNi can do to an innocent anime by only changing dialouge and names. I can stand "Richard and Rachel Moore" but there is no way on earth I will ever call the boy "Jimmy" Kudo. His name is Shin'ichi, Fukunaga! SHIN-FRICKIN'-ICHI!!! *grabs something blunt to go hit Gen Fukunga over the head*

Hmmm, no don't think so, at least no more than he looks like Jimmy. But man, it sure is a long series, whether it's 162 or 300+! Just think, if they ever release it all on DVD... how many discs will that be? Even supposing they were super generous and crammed six on a disc... 162 into 6 = 27 discs!

Well from what I can gather it still hasn't finished yet!

The new detective, I believe, becomes a regular on the show. Or has enough appearances to become a big character. There will also be another... but to avoid spoilers...

good point, perhaps the other detective does becomes a regular. Makes sense. But for the dvd releases, on vol. 1 they have, i think 4 episodes on the dvd, if they continue doing the same for the whole series it would be about 41 dvds (if thre are 162 eps) more if there are more episodes than that. But does anyone know if he ever finds a permanent cure or does he remain a kid for most of the show?

I'm pretty sure the series is not over yet. But... he has found the creator of the poison. But I'll stop there.

I agree, I like to keep original names, but those names aren't too bad. From what I remember, they do that for some copywrite things, like sellings toys and such. I don't really quite understand it, but oh well.

I just checked. The lastest episode I can find is 371

http://hem.fyristorg.com/dreamforest/default.htm
http://www.conan.esmartkid.com/

That's a lot of episodes. 0_o.

Yeah, I think you're right. I sure don't have that much room on my bookshelf! This probably isn't a series many people would buy all of, just the episodes they like.

I believe Splintered is correct also about the series not being finished. I'm pretty sure the manga hasn't even come to an end yet, so the question about whether Jimmy/Shinichi ever gets permanently back to normal remains unanswered. Maybe there's someone hanging around here who's seen/read what's currently happening with Metantei Conan in Japan. It sure isn't me.

I was visting caseclosed.com because i was bored and stumbled across the FAQ section. I thought this might be interesting....

Q: Why did you change the name to Case Closed?
A: Due to legal considerations.

Q: Why did you change the character names?
A: Working closely with our Japanese partners, the names of the characters were chosen for the North American audience.

Yeah, you gotta admit, Ran and Shinichi aren't very common names here, but then again, neither are the gazillion other anime character names out there. I can understand the change though. Case Closed was intended to reach a broader audience than just hardcore anime fans. Americanizing the names was simply intended to help that.

Jimmy/shinichi/Jimmy/shinichi/Jimmy/shinichi ...Is your tongue tied yet?

Me!Me!
a sad light shone
turning into wings that cuts the white darkness

shone upon by the cold sun
I had some limited freedom
the miraculous night cast by the mirror
started to remove my mask, my soul

on the other side of the collapsing wall
despair and hope looks the same
if there's a heart that's yet to be seen
lets head to the end of the prologue

in the world where the wind blows like a blade
what is it I should protect?
in a journey where I know one painful thing after another
I get closer to the true me

the fake light is disappearing
the true light is born
in these hands...

pierce through the night dyed in white
keep on creating a new era
create time with your heart
fly through the eternal white night

-English lyrics for White Night, True Light, the opening theme of D.N Angel

Question one is understandable... They had to change "Jungle Emporer Leo" to "Kimba the White Lion" because there were trademarks on both Leo (MGM) and on simba (one of the major circuses... Barnum & Bailey I think, or Ringling Brothers) Trademarks are a pain...

As for changing the names for other reasons, there is NO excuse... None... Nada... Zilch. That's an unforgiveable one, sorry. It should never happen. These people are STUPID if they think that it wouldn't have an audience in america if they kept Japanese names... I mean, that thinking was asinine when they did it in Sailormoon days, but with all the kagomes and Fujikos and pikachus out there, that little bit of thinking that borders on racism is definately debunked...

yeah... Funimation sucks... I'm scared of what they're gonna do to Kodocha... If they change the names, I'm gonna scream...

As far as I know there are legal problems that come with keeping the normal Japanese name.

Though I still don't like it, it's not as if it is the worst thing to ever happen to anime...

What's better? Anime with name changes, or no anime at all?? Personally, I don't mind what the characters are called as long as i'm entertained.

I miss that little guy…

Oh, Detective Conan.
I can see how those who take a story at ‘face value’ would be disappointed if names or places changed. But those people who play the characters and their names matter little in respects to greater plot. If the stories purpose is still intact, then how much does the rest matter? That is not to say that you still cannot prefer one over the other.

Have you ever seen a Broadway Production? Or any Play? The characters may change slightly or the people who portray them, but the over all story is still the same. It’s perfectly ok.

I think it turned out alright, even entertaining at times. But the genre is not really my cup-o-tea.

Depend on it. God's work done in God's way will never lack God's supply. He is too wise a God to frustrate His purposes for lack of funds, and He can just as easily supply them ahead of time as afterwards, and He much prefers doing so.
- J. Hudson Taylor
I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.

It's all a legal thing. THough i agree they should try to keep the names the same, it really doesn't matter as long as i get to see it and they don't cut any of the story line out.

It isn't a legal issue for the Japanese names... There is no reason why they couldn't keep the japanese names. If it was legal to play in Japan, then those same Japanese names are legal to show here... Allow me to quote:

A: Working closely with our Japanese partners, the names of the characters were chosen for the North American audience.

In other words, this is the asinine reasoning behind really old US anime releases like Sailormoon. "Oh, these american kids won't accept characters with names like Usagi and Makoto." What I don't accept while watching it is that obviously Japanese people have names like Jimmy and Rachel... Also, I'm not all that fond of opening and ending theme dubs either... They need to keep the original singers. In 99% of the cases, the Japanese themes are better as are the singers... In Macross plus, for instance, Fukami Rika was a much better voice than the american singer, and the song (voices) was actually poetic. I don't know what the lyrics are to the them in Japanese for Detective Conan, but I cringe every time I hear that "It was the first new century in 100 years" gah... Well, if the Japanese line is even close to that stupid, I'll forgive Funi for that one, but not for the names... Or, from what I hear, screwing up the dialogue, though I obviously have nothing to compare it to...

Of course, I must say we in the US do have it much better as for buyable anime... Anime is VERY expensive in Japan, except, you know, what you watch on TV... It's like 30 bucks or more for 2 episodes... So, we have it MUCH better here when it comes to buyable anime... I just wish they wouldn't mess with the titles, names, and dialogue...

:eh: Ya act as if I have no reason to be upset, but the thinking that went behind the changing of the names was stupid. There are a few other things I'm not happy about either... See, if Funi hadn't done this show, another company may have, meaning another company may have done better. Funi and manga really should go bankrupt... The american anime fandom would be much better off for it. ADV, animeigo, and a few other companies could do all of the anime... Either that, or Funi totally cleans up its act (I don't expect as much from Manga, because the stuff they do is accepted by more of the anime fans) changing their names, going out of their way to make it seem like it takes place in the US (in the dub, anyhow) and the altering of certain images to fit their version...

Esoteric wrote:Oh, and uh, the lyrics to the opening song, are pretty much the same in Japanese. Subtitle: "first end of the century in 100 years..."

Well, then, the japanese line sucked too... That's a horrible line. Watching the Japanese opening and ending, the lyrics sorta suck all the way around... So I guess Funi gets off on that one (though I'm still not big on singing translated lyrics, because translating it AND getting it to rhyme usually ends up in missing some things from the song...)

In any case, just got DVD 1 from Netflix, and it is a pain in the butt watching it in Japanese now because I have to adjust to different names... Shin'ichi, ran... See, you can say "just watch the subs", but the problem is showing it to my friends and family, who would never watch a subtitled movie or TV show (except maybe the passion) adjusting to new voices is one thing... I'm a veteran anime fan, I can handle that... Adjusting to new names is annoying, particularly when they change things on the screen to fit the american version, so I'm sorta mission out on some of those things. I admit there aren't many, but still... It is sort of annoying when the say shin'ichi and on the screen it says Jimmy...

At least in this case I got one with subs that were some sort of translation rather than just the dub following subs, which is more than I can say for some of Funi's DVDs in the past...

Also, this came up before I got the DVD: The end credits... Funi acts like they MADE this show... 4/5 of the credit screens are all the funi staff (they say produced by Gen Fukunaga... and have production staff, all from Funi) What the heck? Then they don't even list the Japanese cast... That's a big faux pas... Many anime fans watch an anime purely because of the seiyuu, but not giving credit where its due is always bad.

Yeah, I think all around my frustration with Funimation should be understandable... Particularly when they don't release the DVDs in order, another annoying thing (they have only five DVDs released, according to their site... Stradling several seasons...)

Speaking of "out of order" my friends told me that they edited DBGT out of order... I don't know for sure because I never watched the Funi version... But, they have a very bad record...

Anyhow, that's the last of my complaints. I stated my case. I must say, I absolutely love this series... I hope Funi either loses the license and someone else picks it up, or they get off their lazy butts and release the rest of the DVDs in order...

Her name is Ran... I'm not sure what her surname is, or what her dad's name is, in the show... It's certainly not moore. Over 200 eps, and I know he won't be an adult again until the end... That's a bit depressing... One of the reasons I watch anime is BECAUSE they are (usually) serial and (usually) short...

Oh well... I'll stop when I get tired of it, I guess (or, more accurately, after the next DVD, which is season 4 DVD 1, since Netflix only has 2 of them...)

All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Her last name is Mori, accoring to the subs. I've also seen it spelled Mouri.

Really?! *drooling* Where'd you get that?

Let's see... I counted how many episodes had been shown on CN and got 50. Now that they've started rerunning it will be Nov. 11 before 'episode 51' comes around. That's assuming they don't change their scheduling. Bummer. Oh well, I'll enjoy the reruns for now.
