Parents and Anime

I know better than watching some of my darker movies with my parents, although all my anime is not that dark though. I'm talking about live-action movies like "Fargo" with so many "F" words and such, but my parents trust me. They never objected really.

My parents haven't exactly had a huge problem with anime. Of course this might have something to do with the fact that they're not always aware of how much I spend on it; I don't think they'd care though cuz I'm the "eBay Master" in the house when I comes to getting freaking great prices for series and stuff. Have had some issues concerning it with my mom and whether or not it's affecting me negatively (time spent, fantasy content). We got some stuff worked out though and she said she'd be willing to watch some since she willing admits to not knowing anything about it. I'm thinking of showing her Voices of a Distant Star, maybe Grave of the Fireflies, Rahxephon (provided we setup some kind of time schedule to get through it efficiently), and maybe Samurai X: Reflections (I explained the premis of the two OVAs to her). What do you guys think?

Hmm, my parents don't care. They're just cartoons from Japan. In America there's good and bag cartoons and in Japan there are good and bad. Granted, there tends is more bad in Japanese cartoons even though the show might not exist for violence or language or joking about sex.

Well my mom likes anime and manga. She likes the romantic stuff best, and also some stuff like Castle in the Sky and Lain. (She likes Lain! I can't stand it!) Well, anyway.

My dad doesn't like anime, but... one time... they were running an episode of Last Exile on TV. And... it was a great episode...

For those who have seen it, let's just say it had a great space battle in it. ^-^

Anyway, my mom turned it on, and my dad... watched part of it! He liked it. He liked the battle. I'll tell you, it made my day. That's probaby my favorite part in the series anyway. ^-^

I can't really speak for my mom. I think she trusts my judgement to some degree in what I choose to watch/read. She's supportive, and even buys me manga and stuff sometimes.

My dad likes anime, but it's kinda confusing. He basically makes fun of everything we watch together. We certainly have some different tastes in anime as well. I never know what he will like/dislike. It's all very stressful...

By the way, I have a developed an anime FAQ for parents which might be helpful for some of you in explaining your interest to mom and dad (don't let them be disuaded by the extreme examples I've mentioned on the front page!)

My whole family likes Studio Ghibli anime, adn my parents don't care too much about anime, as long as there's no detailed nudity or anything. Once, my mom and little sister sat through an episode of Rurouni Kenshin with me, and my mom really liked it. My dad would probably be watching Fullmetal Alchemist with me too, but he's always busy and goes to bed before it's on.

Anime is very cult and my dad understands cult. The only problem is that anime is usually pretty sexual so that is sometimes a source of tension.

But my dad did enjoy Cowboy Bebop: The Movie when I showed it to him.

I got really into anime at universtiy. My mom didn't mind when it was a little Voltron or Salormoon. But then I got into Escaflowne, Ranma 1/2, Inuyasha, Fushigi Yugi and so on. Started buying manga and anime related items. Thats when i started getting the Peral Harbor lecture from my grandparents. And everyones disapproval pretty much. I was already 21 when I got all into it too. I fianlly was able to get my mom to watch Vampire Hunter D. She loved it. Said it was weird but she liked it. I think that my parents have misconceptions about what anime is. I've tried to explain it to them but they won't listen. I had to trick my mom into watching Vampire Hunter D with me. And she likes Vampires. My next battle is getting her to watch some Studio Gibli films. My sister and cousins who are still in Elementary school and Junior high are the only familly members I have who don't look at me strange when I mention anime. And I have one 18 year old cousin who likes Full Metal Alchemist. Oh well, I'm an adult I can watch whatever I feel comfortable watching even if everyone I live with looks at me funny.

That's a fantastic FAQ Liz. I wish i'd read that FIRST before doing all the research I did - not so bad I guess, as it led me here anyway

What I so don't get is the Pearl Harbor thing, I mean how long do you keep on hating an entire culture/ethnic group for the bad decisions their leaders made over a half centruy ago...would these folks not buy a VW Bug as well?

No they only like American. -_- But my grandpa is part german so he doesn't mind them.

My mom on the otherhand would like a lot of different thing I've seen. Considering all the fantasy, sci-fi, and mysteries she likes to watch. I just have to try and get rid of spe of her preconceptions. I was really happy she liked the one I showed her. even though it took me over a year to actually convince her to watch it.

My parents thought it was wierd that I was still watching "cartoons" when I first got into it, but I think they understand better now. They don't really care at all anymore.

You know what 'Cult' is right? It's something that is not considered very popular but has a loyal base of fans. Anime isn't excactly mainstream. Neither is comics, true sci-fi (really, really scientific science fiction,) and Mystery Science Theater 3000, but my dad likes all of those, so he understands what anime is like. Does that make sense?

Well on that subject especially in Asia those feelings run deep. And while it's not right it's very understandable especially on the Chinese side.

Anyway I think I'll show my parents Grave of the Fireflies. They've seen Jin-Roh, some Cowboy Bebop, and some GiTS: SAC.

Yeah, my parents were pretty skeptical about anime from the get-go. When Pokemon got really popular, everyone at my school (adults, at least) thought it was evil or whatever, and they eventually banned kids from bringing anything Pokemon to school. Even though my brother and I still played it, my parents were never really comfortable with it. Then came DBZ, which my brother and I used to watch on a regular basis. My mom didn't like all of the violence, so she was really skeptical about that, too. She's usually pretty skeptical about magic, violence, etc. in shows and games (she made my brother get rid of his old NES Zelda games...ROMS soon became my best friends! XD). She's loosened up A LOT over the years, though. She doesn't really mind Final Fantasy, but she's still kinda touchy when it comes to anime.

It sounds like a lot of parents think that animated shows are for children. When I told my mom I wanted to buy a couple of Ruroken DVDs, she asked why I wanted to buy something so "juvenille." O.o XD I had to explain that anime wasn't for children, even though children watch it a lot. Once I told her that Ruroken was, in many ways, similar to The Last Samurai (she loved this movie, and it's my personal favorite), she eased off a bit.

The funny part came when I bought my first mangas. Both of my parents (not to mention several people in my school) were beyond confused by the way the books are read. I guess my one saving grace in all of this is that I'm an artist, and the style I prefer right now is anime. I guess that kind of eased my parents into being a little more lenient when it comes to me wanting to buy anime. My mom still thinks it's wierd, though. She picked up vol. 5 of Rurouni one day and started reading in the middle of the book...XD She was surprised when she heard me pronounce "Hiten Mitsurugi-ryu"...XD I guess the only time she got skeptical about RK was when she saw the picture on the back of vol. 14, which is of Saitoh smoking a cigarrette. But I just asked her, "Do you watch movies where people smoke?" "Yes." "Do you smoke?" "No." And there you have it. ^_^ So the best way to try to get your parents to understand anime would be to try and compare it to something they watch. ^_^

I've already tried compareing it to something they like. They just are being stuborn. Come one my mom loves a movie called "The Nightmare Before Christmas".

OH MY GOSH! ME TOO! And it annoys me so much when my dad goes like "why are you watching KIDS shows" when im watching monster...which most certaintly aint for kids.... craziness

My dad says eveything I'm watching is Yu Gi Oh. heh. I'll be watching Madlax, Monster, Fafner, or something and he'll say why are you watching Yu Gi Oh. 0_o I don't watch that. My dad watches Disney movies animated and otherwise, so if he wants to say something about kids shows hes the one watching them. heh. Though those are fun too. =)
