I'm definitely a casual fan. My little sister, however, is between a casual fan and an anime hobbyist. (I haven't convinced her to join this forum, though.) She has a friend that is an anime hobbyist who has a big sister that is an elitist fan. My sister brings over and watches dvds she borrows from her friend's sister all the time so for being just a casual fan, I watch a heck of a lot of anime. That was quite a mouthful . . . uh . . . handful . . . whatever.

Actually, leet predates MegaTokyo, and was merely referenced in MT #9. It is the famous MT #9, however, that has become the iconic reference to 1337. I refer you to the Wikipedia (wikipedia.org) article for more information, so as not to clutter the thread.

I'm a casual anime fan, but definitely a hobbyist manga fan (reason being, I can afford to buy more manga than anime ^^) I do watch fansubs though and sometimes tv, but I usually forget to catch the shows on tv.

Elitist, but I only have a few fansubs (to complete my Sailor Moon collection), and I've never been to a con. But those other things describe me to a "T."

I'm not an anime fan anymore at all, but...
I used to be a casual fan mostly. I think that hobbies should be taken in moderation, but very few anime fans really do that I think. People just tend to take it WAY overboard. When people start speaking that code-switched japanglish crap, then I RUN!
Since you mentioned that your definitions were "loose" I'd like to adjust them a little bit to suit me better.

I'm pretty mucha hobbyist. Except for the fact that I like subs much better then dubs. There are too many annoying American voice actors/actresses.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. I'm basically a hobbyist. I prefer dubs because I always like to do things while I am watching anime, and to have to read subtitles at the same time is a pain. You can ask anyone who knows me really well and they will tell you that I really hate subtitles. I figure that I'll watch it in Japanese when I learn Japanese (which is next semester! Yippee!). Okay, enough rambling on about subtitles. Let's see...other things that make me a hobbyist. Oh, I've only been to one con. That was SDCC '04. I will be going in '05 and going to all four (+ some) days. I only got to go to one day last time, and it wasn't nearly enough. Lastly, I do only buy the series that I am interested in. If I don't like it, I won't buy it.

Anime Fan Type
I'm definitely in the hobbyist category. I've met too many elitists that have turned me off into going any deeper. I'll always be a fan, but I will never be insanely obsessed. I hate when people say they are elitists and will only watch the subs. I admit, the voice acting in the Japanses in normally better. I guess I just think if you are really so elite you wouldn't read english subtitles but learn Japanese. Now that would be a true elitist.

If I had to choose based on a one-dimensional scale, I'd choose hobbyist, but my fandom is rather 2 or 3 dimensional... I mean, for one thing I prefer certain genres and avoid others (Example: I like comedy, romance, and enigmatic but avoid dry war, fighting anime, mecha, and just about anything put out by clamp)
There aren't actually that many anime I really enjoy. I hate most of the ones on TV, edited or not, and I prefer subbed to raw or dubbed, but would like to be ABLE to watch something raw... In Nadesico, I prefer the Dub at times I want to watch for the comedy (oh, nadesico is a mecha anime, but I watch for the interpersonal drama and comedy, not for the fighting ant mecha)
I don't have enough money to own a lot of anime, but I own Nadesico, Sailormoon R (strictly for nostalgia purposes), Grave of the Fireflies, and Akira (only because it was bought for me)
I am incredibly bothered by edits... That makes me elitist in that regard, but it is an almost moot point as I don't like most of the anime on TV... The only one currently that bugs me is Detective Conan... The name changes and "cartoonizing" of the dialogue is entirely uncalled for... I think that merely because something is a "cartoon" (meaning, by my own definition and not the dictionary's (though they may be similar, I didn't look it up) "simplified artwork to represent things iconically rather than in detail") doesn't mean that the dialogue and story has to fit the cartoony mold(sp?)

American Tale, All Dogs Go to Heaven, Secret of NIMH... These are all excelent movies (but avoid the sequals, which bleuth had no part in...) So, I guess I'm not as much of an "anime" fan as I am an animation fan.

Hobbyist. I don't have the nerve or the extra cash to buy a DVD or VHS I've never seen, unless I know darn well I'll like it. The only anime I've done that with was Castle In the Sky, because I knew I'd love it. Hayao Miyazaki is the next Tezuka. I will always buy his stuff, seen or not.

Exactly. Wouldn't ever watch Bebop subbed, but wouldn't watch Voices of a Distant Star dubbed. It's all about quality preferences.

Yeah. Sometimes it is bothersome, but often content is cleaned up a bit, which can be good.
