Being bland and screwing with source material, usually.

To be fair, Studio Deen's anime aren't ALL terrible. I rather like Full Moon wo Sagashite, and Ranma 1/2 is excellent as well. Star Ocean EX wasn't bad either.

However, nobody would call the Full Moon or Ranma anime close to the source material. Studio Deen is also responsible for the Fruits Basket anime, which had one of the WORST ENDINGS OF ALL TIME, and the Star Ocean EX anime deviated from the original game in really weird ways.

So yeah. They do mess with source material pretty badly, which sometimes works for a manga to anime conversion, but a VN is a bit of a different story.

So, I just watched ep 1 of Super Robot Taisen OG: The Inspector. I did a little reading on the prequel, Divine Wars, beforehand, and the show made a lot more sense than it would have otherwise. I gotta say, the history and politics of the SRW:OG world are kinda neat. Still, it does just sort of chuck you into the thick of things, and I would be lying if I said I wasn't a bit lost regarding some of the finer points of the plot. I am just trying to go with it, as the show is exciting enough for me to keep watching for now and hope important details will hammer themselves out in later episodes. The first episode was exactly as everyone advertised it: robot fanservice. Hope it remains a good time throughout the next six months.

You know how I said you probably won't want to watch Panty and Stocking? Well, you definitely should not watch Yosuga no Sora.

Togainu no Chi was kind of boring.

Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru was kind of amusing, but wow, I despise Omigawa Chiaki so much.

I am impatiently waiting to hear if Togainu no Chi is faithfully adapted or not. I am hoping not. . . Tegami Bachi Reverse was nice. =) Next on my list to try is Otome Yokai Zakuro. Waiting for crunchyroll's releasing-to-us-lesser-nonmembers of Squid Girl and The World God Only Knows...

And (I thought I replied earlier) LOL @ the comic. Okay, I see now.

Well, in an effort to expand my horizons, I thought I'd try a simulcast that I wouldn't typically watch. After all, it's only once a week that I'm committing to here. So, I watched the first ep of The World God Only Knows. And, to the surprise of a few people I'm sure, I actually liked it. This is much more than I was expecting. I laughed out loud a few times, and generally had a fun half hour. I'll be back for ep 2.

Fanservice warning for episode 2. It's not a terrible amount, but it is there.

Kuragehime is the new Brains Base and noitaminA show for this season.

It was pretty good! But, I think that you should at least watch the incredible OP. Also, it seems Funimation is not yet streaming it, so maybe that noitaminA deal wasn't for as long as we may have thought.

And I think that's the last new show to start airing for this season.

Kuragehime isn't particularly my cup of tea, but all the movie references in the opening were pretty amusing. Star Wars, Singing in the Rain, Mary Poppins, James Bond...

Also, The World God Only Knows episode 2 had a Peanuts reference which was pretty win.

Well, God Only Knows ep 2 was fun. I really like this series so far.

I may end up dropping Squid Girl though. Getting a little boring.

Soredemo episode 2 was heck of a lot funnier than episode 1. Chiaki Omigawa has certainly improved a lot as an actress since her debut in Soul Eater, and plays an overly loud lovable idiot perfectly.

I gave up on waiting for ANN to actually review Togainu no Chi and I am not sure if it was disturbing, boring, stupid, pointless or mildly entertaining. I do think I am leaning toward "pointless hope it gains a point." Because as all "coolio death game plot" as I am, pointless massacre without plot purpose rather sickens me...

I underestimated Bakuman, it's genuinely good.

And my two anime watching buddies both dislike squid girl.

And just as easily as I started watching shows, I will now proceed to shed them.

Panty and Stocking dropped for not being compelling beyond the production.
Togainu no Chi dropped for boring.
Bakuman dropped for being the same as the manga (it's still really good though).

Still up for dropping are KamiNomi (if I switch to the manga), and Zakuro, Arakawa UB2, SoreMachi, and Squid Girl are all on the three episode test, but I expect them to be able to make it.

Lovin' episode two of Super Robot Wars. Very entertaining. I definitely feel like I have some semblance of my bearing in the SRW:OG universe. This episode contained even less talky and even more fighty. The Chokujin are absolutely great.

Super Robot Wars OG: The Inspector has good production values, and surprisingly good pacing for a video game adaptation. I've played OG1, so I can follow it fine, but it's not very friendly to anyone not already familiar with the characters and organizations.

Otome Youkai Zakuro is interesting and enjoyable. Could be a dark horse title this season. And I sort of like historical/youkai/etc. series.

The World God Only Knows has succeeded at being a good adaptation of a fairly successful manga. Will this finally break Manglobe's streak of low selling anime?

Saw the first ep of Shinrei Tantei Yakumo- while I think Ghost Hunt did it better, I'll stick with it anyway.

Dropped Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru after the first ep- total otaku maid pandering with one of the most annoying voices I've heard. Possibly might be the same VA that did Nodame.

That sound you heard was The World God Only Knows being oh-so-forcefully dropped.

Now...I think I will go burn through Tegami Bacchi so that I'll have another simulcast to watch...

Arakawa's second season is, for some reason, much better than the first and so, it will get to continue onward. Likewise for the other SHAFT show of the season, SoreMachi, which has been nice and fun in spite of how much I burn with rage when I hear Omigawa.

Squid Girl AND Princess Jellyfish, all in one season! 2010 is the year of the underwater creature anime!

(I better put this, lest anyone take offense or think I am being harsh/slamming their show) =)

Every quarter Dengeki does an online poll on what people(or, at least, their reader base) are anticipating for the next season, and what they think is the best anime aired during the previous season.
Here are the expectation results for the Fall:

*1, Toaru Majutsu no Index II
*2, Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai
*3, Bakuman
*4, Shinryaku! Ika Musume
*5, Star Driver: Kagayaki no Takuto
*6, Arakawa Under the Bridge x Bridge
*7, Sora no Otoshimono: Forte
*8, Super Robot Taisen OG: The Inspector
*9, Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru
10, Kami nomi zo Shiru Sekai
11, Panty & Stocking with Garterbelt
12, Tegami Bachi Reverse
13, Togainu no Chi
14, Hakuouki Hekketsuroku
15, Yosuga no Sora
16, Iron Man
17, Hyakka Ryouran: Samurai Girls
18, Tantei Opera Milky Holmes
19, MM!
20, Motto To LOVE-Ru

I guess that Otome Youkai Zakuro, Fortune Arterial, and Kuragehime are the odd ones out. Otherwise, I'm sort of surprised The World God Only Knows isn't higher.

For comparison's sake, here's the satisfaction ranking for last season(with the pre/early season expectation ranking in parentheses):
*1, (*1) K-ON!!
*2, (*9) Seitokai Yakuindomo
*3, (13) Highschool of the Dead
*4, (11) Mitsudomoe
*5, (*3) Sengoku Basara Two
*6, (*1) Strike Witches 2
*7, (15) Seikimatsu Occult Gakuin
*8, (12) Densetsu no Yuusha no Densetsu
*9, (*2) Ookami-san to Shichinin no Nakamatachi
10, (*4) Nurarihyon no Mago
11, (**) Giant Killing
12, (*5) Amagami SS
13, (*8) Kuroshitsuji II
14, (*7) Sekirei ~Pure Engagement~
15, (**) Rainbow

I'm a bit surprised to see Seitokai Yakuindomo and Mitsudomoe up there, but I wasn't really following those two shows, so what do I know. I'm glad to see Ookami-san and Amagami drop.

Fall looks about right. I suspect the low expectations for TWGOK might be because they don't trust that an anime adaptation will be as good as the manga. I am surprised to see Squid Girl all the way up there though, I didn't think the manga was that popular.

So guys, what're you watching. I believe we've all settled into our shows.

1. Star Driver is the best.
2. Kuragehime is similarly great.
3. Arakawa Under the Bridge x Bridge is surprisingly interesting (much more than its first season.
4. Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai is interesting in its Genshiken-like qualities, but is dumb in other ways.
5. The World God Only Knows has been pretty fun; I look forward to more meta.
6. Otome Youkai Zakuro is pretty girly but pretty okay.
7. Soredemo Machi wa Mawatteiru is alright but getting punished because I still detest Omigawa Chiaki.
8. Shinryaku! Ika Musume is down here because I like the other shows more, really.
