Video Girl AI anyone see it?

Postby mitsuki lover » Fri Sep 08, 2006 12:21 pm

I have this on my finalized list of anime to buy one of these days and so I was wondering if anyone has ever seen it before. From what little I know about it it's kind of like Ah!My Goddess except the hero is a computer geek and instead of a Goddess he winds up with a computerized girl who some how comes out of the computer when things go whacko with it.Sounds interesting and I think I have seen the manga for it but have yet to pick it up and read it. :)

it's quite a nice manga, but I wouldn't quite characterize it as like AMG. There are definitely similarities on the surface though. VGAi is way way more fanservicey for one. There's a heavy sexual element throughout it. It should be noted that while in AMG keitaro meets beldandy through a fairly innocent event, the main guy in vgai (can't remember his name.. mote-something?) meets Ai when she comes out of his tv when he's trying to watch a porn tape =P

If you're familiar with other manga by Katsura Masakazu (I"s, DNA^2, Shadow Lady), this is actually my least favorite of his works (though still quite good IMO). I"s has better art, better characters, etc. DNA^2 was far funnier. VGAi, while a sweet story, simply fails to be his best work in any category I think. It's definitely got some great scenes though!

Anyway, 4 out of 5 stars for art, 3 out of 5 for story, 3 out of 5 for characters.

Ah! sorry, I was sorta reviewing the manga more than the anime. I thought I was in the manga forum XDD

Um. the main difference between what I wrote and what I would've written about the anime is that the anime is REALLY compressed. VGAi is a 14 vol manga. They took 6 vols or so and turned it into a 6 ep ova. The end is, well, complete, but definitely vague and somewhat unsatisfying. The music isn't fabulous.

The real tragedy of it all is that, as I mentioned, while vgai is my least fav masakazu work, the vgai ovas are probably the best adaptions of his work to anime. The dna^2 anime really falls off after ep 5 or so, and I really can't talk about the I"s ovas without getting upset XD

Anyway, the anime. fanservice ahoy. decent but not standout-ish music. Minimal adaptation of the art, which is good as masakazu has great designs typically.

I've got a brief review of it here. I didn't much care for it, although Megumi Hayashibara as Ai almost makes it worth watching.

I have to disagree here. I found the music one of the best things about Video Girl Ai. In fact I purchased both of the soundtracks.

As mentioned it does contain a good bit of fanservice. The story itself is bittersweet and at times very moving. The ending is somewhat confusing in regard to some of the symbolism that is used. All in all I found it to be a very nice compact work and if you like romance dealing with unrequited love, this will be right up your alley.

Eh...I watched it and it was okay, I guess. The animation and everything was nice but there are a lot of..."convenient" shots in it. The story was okay, but...it wasn't THAT impressive.

I thought the music was quite good, too. One of the show's finer points.

Considering what you've expressed interest in here, I would say this show is right down your alley. I thought the show was charming and sweet - a romance from a shonen perspective. It's a good story with a fairly solid ending, although it feels a bit rushed - probably because it ends in the middle of the story told in the manga.

The show is not for the youngsters out there, but you, like me, don't fall in into that category. :)

I hope not as I have two nephews in their 20s and a niece and nephew in their teens.

Any way I have to go see the doctor in Spokane tommorrow and hope to drop by Borders and if I find it there I might just buy it.
