Kimagura Orange Road, anyone?

Postby Rocketshipper » Fri Jun 09, 2006 9:31 pm

I searched and didn't see any topics about this show, so I'm making one.

So, Is there anyone here who's familier with this series and could give me an idea of if it's good or not? I've heard that it's really good, a classic of anime, and I saw the 2nd movie a long time ago and loved it so I'm really curious. The reason I ask is because animeondvd announced that Animeigo will be losing their licence for the show soon, after the current stock of DVDs runs out, thats it. Pretty soon it may be too late to see this show at all; Right Stuf's sale for this week includes the Orange Road TV box set and I'm seriously considering buying it, but it's a lot of money (124$) and I thought I'd ask around first to see what other people think. Is it a worthy purchase? Is Kimagura really a must see classic? What do you guys think?

I would definitely call KOR a must see classic. It's one of the real roots of situational comedy in anime (along with Miyuki, way more obscure, and arguably better).

You might want to hunt around online and dl some scanlations of the manga (which is about 18 vols as I recall) and see if you like those. I would say that the movies are a bit more serious than most of the show. The show really is romantic comedy, whereas I seem to recall the movies being a bit more solemn/melancholic.

Time and time again I see a KOR plotline reused in a modern anime, hehe :)

Yes I must say of the anime shows I've watched in the last year, It was definitely the one which had me most hooked. I got over the dated look in the animation as soon as the plot began to unfold. There isn't a lot of action, but what's there is good. Kasuga Kyosuke sure has problems!

I originally purchased all the VHS tapes in the early days and immediately switched to DVDs when the box sets first came out. It is indeed a classic and truly one of my favorite titles. There is mild language throughout the show and some sexual innuendo particularly on the part of the main characters two high school friends. It is a romantic comedy but KOR never takes itself too seriously. In fact a number of episodes tend to be parodies of everything from the movie The Graduate to some of the old Godzilla movies.

AE is having a huge sale on some of it's titles. I must say that the $9.98 per volume of Urusei Yatsura TV plus Movies plus OAVs has me seriously considering purchasing that series right out. I don't think I will see prices like that again. But I'm somewhat torn on if I really want that series so badly. I remember watching volume 1 and thinking it was just so - so but I recently watched movie 1 and thought it was pretty good. I'll have to flip a coin on it.

(Btw, Rev.Doc is referring to AnimEigo's website - http://www.animeigo.com - who is selling the entire KOR series, OVAs, and movie 1 for far less than Right Stuf.)

Yes, definitely one of the best anime series I have ever watched. It starts out pretty slow, but as you progress in the series, you'll feel like you're getting to know the characters more personally. It's a fun show and a classic, by all means.
