CPM Bankruptcy

Postby Rocketshipper » Fri May 26, 2006 7:00 pm

According to Anime News Network, Central Park Media, the company that licenced, among other titles, Slayers Tv, Revolutionary Girl Utena, Shamanic Princess, Geobreeders, and Himiko-den, is going to file for bankruptcy :(. I think it's sad to see any US Anime distributor go out of business, and it makes me a little paranoid for the others.

Drat. And they're one of the companies that've been around the longest, too.

Interesting. Is this a sign of a saturation point of anime in America or merely bad business practices on the part of CPM. I suspect the second option. I know they tried to do too much with anime and manga publishing... neither done very well and seemed to have a hard time competing with the other companies.

On the plus side, hopefully this means Anime18 gets put out of business (they're still a subsidiary of CPM right?)

Well I know that MOST of CPM's titles WERE hentais :/

I just remember they had stuff like Graveyard of the Fireflies and things like that... oh and with Slayers, FUNI's owned them for almost a year now with the boxsets being 75% off the orginal price^^

Not particularly surprising. In terms of anime distributors going out of business. they would have been my first guess.

When was the last time they actually licensed something of note, anyway?

They're not in the best financial situation at the moment either, they need to lighten the amount of licenses they have and haven't released yet.

Hope they fix the Japanese track sound issues in boxset 1. Even the "replacement" set was pretty bad

The only things they've done that I'm truly concerned about are Patlabor and Lodoss, to be honest.
"People who sin say this, 'That they had to, to survive.' People who sin say this, 'That it is too late to stop.' That shadow called sin dogs them steadily. Without a word, remorse and agony are repeated, to finally end up at despair. But sinners don't know that if they turn around there is a light, a light that keeps shining on them ever so warmly, a light that will never fade."

Here's something I just thought of. Could this mean Disney would be able to acquire Grave of the Fireflies?

Actually, even if CPM were to stay in business, I suspect Disney would indeed buy the rights as soon as CPM lost them. If they want to complete their Disney-released Ghibli canon, then Grave would be necessary. Of course, Castle of Cagliostro would also be necessary for that, but not as necessary, since it's not official Ghibli, just Miyazaki.

Anyway, this is also the company that released the entire Patlabor series, which I just started after loving the first two movies.

Maybe Bandai will pick up Patlabor, since they have one of the movies.

CPM released an official statement today that said the lay-offs were due to Musicland's bankruptcy and implied that CPM itself has no intention of going bankrupt. Only time will tell for sure.

CPM wrote:As our business has been significantly impacted by Musicland's bankruptcy filing, we are facing tightening sales conditions and are currently focusing on a cost cutting program which will structure the company for future growth without our largest customer. A number of very talented and dedicated employees have unfortunately lost their jobs through no fault of their own.

CPM will be happy to assist these fine staff members find employment opportunities, so any company seeking experienced and professional employees are requested to email CPM at HR519@teamcpm.com for further details.

Ah, then my assumtion was correct.

Now that I think about it, I did keep seeing "Anime 18!" signs all over the Anime secion of my local video store. You know, it gives all anime fans a bad name when "Check out our new hentai section!" is plastered all over the normal anime. One doesn't necessarily follow the other...

Although I HAVE heard stories on how some stores/rentals DID stick them side by side or stick innocent anime such as Cardcaptor Sakura beside the porn section -_-;

About CPM though ANN sez:

"Central Park Media Talks August Releases (2006-05-31 13:18:03)
Central Park Media sent out two press releases regarding August releases for Votoms and Wrath of the Ninja. A CPM spokesperson told us while the company is re-organizing, it is also heading forward with new releases."

Several years ago when anime was only starting to go mainstream, my local Blockbusters put all anime in the adult section - including Robotech, Star Blazers, and Pokemon.
