"Yu-Gi-Oh!" food for thought

Postby Animus Seed » Tue May 23, 2006 1:22 pm

Ahem. Now, the last thing I want is to alienate everyone on a website I'm still new to, and mark myself as a legalist or demagogue or whatever. So this is not a "Yu-Gi-Oh! is the devil and all who watch it are going to hell!" thread. Not my intention at all. Even so...

I was thinking one time... if Yamiyugi is the Pharaoh, and the Dark Magician is his servant, and he has Ra and Osiris (Obelisk was not an actual Egyptian god) at his call... is this the same Ra and Osiris that God shamed with the 10 plagues? Is the Dark Magician serving Yamiyugi the same type of magician as Jannes and Jambres, who opposed Moses before Pharaoh and counterfeited matching miracles?

In the context of the anime... highly doubtful. I really doubt the authors even knew about the biblical figures and the incedent with the jews in egypt. I really think their information is based on various sources they found (History Channel and national Geographic-esque stuff). The fact that Obelisk exists means there was probably no serious history involved, and the remainder of the cards point to a more theatrical use of egyptian mythos (3/4 of them arn't even related to egyptian anything).

That being said with enough extrapolation you could say that it might be the same Ra and Osiris... though with the extreme generality of the egyption-ality of the series, it could be an occurance previous to the exodus events. Due to the nature of the card game I'd disagree with the Dark magician thought... Yugi had magicians that wern't cards (once you find the origen of the cards, at least in the manga, it kinda destroys the theory that any card contains a personification of a human from that period).

It's probably because Ra and Osiris also are two of the most familiar names of the
Egyptian Gods. This could also be the same reason why on Stargate one of the original Gou'ald is named Ra(the one that appears in the movie).
