They're similar to the DbZ movies; i.e., they don't fit into the timeline of the series. The first movie is horrible. In the U.S., it's the one that comes on the same disc as the Ninku movie. The second movie is much better.
Ahem. It's a pet peeve of mine. A common misconception is that the second movie is titled "YuYu Hakusho the Movie: Poltergeist Report." This is not true. The series YyH is translated by FUNi, while the movies are done by U.S. Manga Corps. You'll note on the series DVDs the little "Ghost Files" logo?
"Yu" is the kanji for ghost. Repeated twice means the ghost is playful.
"Poltergeist" is a playful ghost.
"Hakusho" literally translated means "very important white paper," i.e., a police report or case file.
Thus, "YuYu Hakusho" equals either "Ghost Files" OR "Poltergeist Report." Thus, the correct reading of the US box art would be "Poltergeist Report: The Movie." The TRUE title of the second movie is "YuYu Hakusho: Chapter of Mortal Combat in Hades--Bonds of Fire" or "Bonds of Fire" for short.
I repeat, stay away from the 1st movie, but the second is good. As I said, they don't fit into the series timeline, though if you really wanted to find a spot for it, the 2nd could reasonably fit into the period of time immediately after the Dark Tournament but before Kuwabara's powers disappear and Sensui shows up. Sorry if I just spoiled anything if you didn't know that. I also apologize if I just said a bunch of stuff you knew already.
