Animes that arent over-rated nor under-rated

Postby Kura Ookami » Tue Jan 25, 2005 1:49 am

This thread complements the two that have already been cretaed. The over-rated and under-rated ones. Only this time the question is what animes live up to the hype that surrounds them or are animes only ever under-rated or over-rated?

Personally i think there's an anime for everyone, but that one anime is not going to be the same for everyone so i dont think there can really be a list of animes that are neither over-rated nor under-rated. Sim ply because every anime is different and every person is different so everyone is going to have different views.

That is why i havent listed any animes here. Feel free to sttempt to prove me wrong, however, I welcome that. List animes you think are neither under-rated nor over-rated. Ie they live up to the hype.

Cowboy Bebop, I would think. It's incredibly popular, even in more "mainstream" anime groups (i.e. not the raw-japanese watching otaku) and yet it deserves every ounce of praise. It is, in my opinion, one of the greatest titles out there that combines a little of everything for a great series.

I almost laughed when I saw the title for this thread, simply because I didn't think we could take those other two threads anywhere else.

Anyway, I would have to say that Spirited Away is one of these titles. It was a huge hit in Japan (topped their all-time box office for a while), it received rave reviews and an Oscar here in the U.S., and I don't think I've ever heard anyone say a bad word against it, nor have I seen any crazy fans gushing over it in excess. I think it hit the mark just right.

Escaflowne...It wasn't all to popular in Japan but was a big hit here but you don't really hear a lot about it anyway. Nadesico also...It was an award winning show in Japan but it's pretty mid-rated out here (though I would call it really under-rated.)

^^^^^^^^^^ Escaflowne. Which I love dearly. To me, it's neither overrated nor underrated. And...it's lovely.

I agree with you Aku-soku-zan. Escaflowne is great...Dual is also neither over or underrated. Now And Then, Here And There...The same. It's one of the best series ever and almost everybody that sees it loves it but it's so little known that it is in this catagory.

I third the mention for Escaflowne. I don't think Matantei Loki Ragnarok is underrated or overrated either. People like the show, and it's got a good sized fanbase both in the US and in Japan, but most of the fans do recognize both its flaws and its weaknesses. =3

Cowboy Bebop...it even went to go beyond my expectation. It's not underrated cause basically its a neccessity for any anime fan (or so I have seen) nor is it overrated cause you don't get cults followin git, or people obsessing on how cool it is nesccarily.

Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal is another anime that I find extremely well-done and neither under or over rated. It's a gem of a movie.

Heh, I didn't like Escaflowne that much. IMO, it was overrated. But i know everyone loves it. It just didnt turn out to be what I thought it was going to be.

Let us see if we can name every anime listed in either the Over-rated or Under-rated threads. I apologize for not listing any anime in particular, but that was my thought while reading the thread. Of course, anime that are correctly rated are not necessarily good, the general opinion of them is merely accurate. Terrible anime that everyone knows is terrible would go on the list.

Not surprising that UC beat me to the punch. I was going to say Maze: The Mega-Burst Space. I heard it was awful and after I watched it, I had to agree that it was. Good theme song, though.

Good point, however, if an anime is under-rated it also doesn't mean the anime is actually good. It only means that compared to the hype surrounding it it is good. Over-rated animes are also not neccessarily bad either. They are merely worse than the hype that surrounds them. So the terms under-rated, rated fairly, and over-rated are not good indications of the quality of anime.

Furthermore everyone's opinions will differ meaning that an anime that is good for one person will not neccessarily be good for another person. So UC Pseudonym, how can anyone be sure that an anime is goiing to be good for them or not?

I believe that was a great deal of my point. Each of these threads has very little to do with the quality of the anime, which is also a subjective trait. Hence, it is impossible to be sure an anime will be considered good by any one individual. All that can be done is looking at the subject matter and genre, and perhaps reading a bit in a bookstore.

i'm going to second the rurouni kenshin, the series rocks and so do the movies, i'm also agree with cowboy bebop, i do wish they'd do a movie about spike getting out of the red dragons and hookin up with jet, i'm also gonna throw in inuyasha, i know there are some of those that are gonna disagree with me, but i do live out here on the east coast so all the anime i can see and hear about is either what's shown on cn or what's available in stores, and since i'm not that familiar with the stuff in stores (since it's not shown on cn), i'm not buying it, so i'd say that inuyasha is neither under-rated nor over-rated
