Excellent review. I have currently finished the first collection and am waiting to get the second collection in the mail this weekend.

This is also one series that surprised me a lot. By the end of the second disk, I was like, "Woah, this is awesome!"

It did have that, which is the sole thing keeping me from recommending it to younger viewers. However, I think this was done out of ignorance instead of malice.

I'll have to see the end before I can comment on the religious themes, but one of the main things I'm really enjoying about the series is the way all the characters are so well fleshed out. My particular favorites are Sanson, Hanson, and Grandis. During the first couple of episodes I was like, "Oh, boy. Another set of Team Rocket clones..."

Thankfully, I was proven wrong. They all turned out being pretty likeable, Jean was not nearly annoying as I half expected him to be, and Nemo is simply the coolest character in the show.

Oh, don't get me wrong. This was a great anime series. Along with Wings of Honneamise, it was the best thing done by Gainax in my opinion (if you're thinking of getting Nadia: The Movie, take my advice and DON'T. It has none of the talent of the TV series). Since the thread seemed to be talking of the theological problems, I went that way.

I'm glad I got the series-- though I wish I'd had access to the special sets as opposed to paying $29.99 x 9 volumes when they first came out

That's exactly how I felt as well about Hanson, Sanson and Grandis, but then they became me favorite characters. Funny how that works out. :sweat:

Well, seeing as I bought the second collection, I'll be seeing the movie anyways. (Which comes with it.) Is it really that bad?

On a side note, each episode causes me to love this series more and more. I think Gainax has really made a masterpiece here.

Yes the series is a classic.

Actually it wasn't made by Gainax at all. Made in 1991, It takes place 5 years later, and was basically an excuse to milk the franchise with a new villain seeking to take over the world. I would just find the whole thing substandard. You might try the review at http://www.animeondvd.com

Well, Anime on DVD has given several anime that I really enjoy mediocre ratings, so I don't rely on them too much. I guess I'll have to judge when I see it.

The movie is truly horrid. They ignore the conclusion part of the series, the villain is laughable, and the animation is pretty bad too. I doubt it would sell if they didn't force you to buy it with the second boxed set.

Well, *I* was dumb enough to buy it. I didn't believe AoD.
Let's not forget how they spend over an hour in a 90 minute movie showing clips from the TV series.

The Island episodes you mean? They could have just cut those down to two or three IMO.

Yeah, there were quite a few parts I enjoyed, but they really dragged it on too much. Plus, the Loony Toons style antics didn't really make me overly entertained, I'm also a bit ticked they completely ruined Ayerten's character, he went from being a likeble guy to a moron.

And the fact is, after two extremely epic episodes, the Island saga feels a little bit like an insult.

I don't know if you read my review or not, but when I mentioned "completely useless characters," he was one that I was referring to. He made a nice "extra" in the beginning, but making him a character later on was just ... I dunno, my opinion I guess. :sweat:

He certainly didn't add anything to the story and was just comic relief. That whole island arc just felt like filler anyway.
