I happen to think that Last Exile's dubbing was done pretty well. (Except for Dio's voice...he sounded creeepy.)

Big O and Wolf's Rain 's dub was very nice too.

I eternally respect Greg Ayres for playing an awesome Son Goku in saiyuki :thumb:

So, as mentioned, Saiyuki was a rather good dub, as was Trigun, Outlaw Star, and 08th MS Team. I usually prefer the original Japanese (Bebop being my one exception), but those were the ones I was pleasantly surprised with.

Trigun, Macross Plus, Wolf's Rain, Jin-Roh, The Big O, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, that's all off the top of my head.

I personally think that the two best dubbed animes are sailor moon and DBZ. Sailoir moon was the very first anime I saw. I know it is wierd for a boy to look at sailor moon but when you are 5 you watch anything when your parents are asleep...

Some of the best I've heard:

Generator Gawl: The character voices were RIGHT ON the mark. They literally sounded exactly like their Japanese counterparts. Some dialogue is actually changed for the better to give the story more sensibility, unfortunately, some dialogue was also changed for the WORST. (Ryo and Koji are gay in the dub, while they were not in the sub.) btw I highly recommend this series to anyone who hasn't seen it.

Gundam Wing: The character voices were actually a bit better than the sub. (Scott McNeil (am I getting his name right?) does Duo's voice perfectly)

Dragonball: The characters were very well voiced, making the dub very enjoyable to watch.

Dragon Ball Z: NOW before anyone flames me for this, let me point out that I'm not refering to the dialogue changes, or altered character personalities, or anything like that. I'm talking about the VOICES only, which were a lot better than the sub. The original Japanese version is better in the long run due to having more drama than the dub, but the Japanese voices can be grating to the ears. Goku's feminine voice does NOT match him, it may have worked for Kenshin's Japanese voice, but not for poor Goku. (I liked Piccolo's Japanese voice though)

Tenchi Muyo: The acting was really good. Many actors were way better than their Japanese counterparts. I HATE the Japanese voices of Ayeka, Mihoshi and Washu. Actually, I didn't like Ayeka's dub voice either.

Outlaw Star: Only saw this series once on CN, I do remember the voice acting being pretty good.

WORST dubs ever:

Yu-Gi-Oh: Now, I've only so far seen the KidsWB dub of this so far, but in my opinion, ANY dub that horribly butchers the original show deserves a spot in 'worst'.

Sonic the Movie: Sonic and Knuckles sound like they've been breathing massive amounts of helium for an extended period of time prior to the movie while Tails sounds like he has a serious nasel congestion. The Japanese voices were pretty good, except for Eggman, who's Japanese voice sounded wierd.

Sonic X: I had already seen about half of the Japanese version before I checked out the dub. I could barely stand five minutes before I shut it off. The dub was massively butchered.

Sorry, I'm going to have to disagree with you, Japher. Sailor Moon's english dub was quite possibly one of the worst dubs I've ever seen. Not even counting the translation changes ('cuz that was one of the rules), they made Zoisite a GIRL (I know why, but still). They gave Luna a British accent and Naru a SOUTHERN accent (ugh). They had four different voice actresses for Usagi (none of 'em good). Let's not even get STARTED on S. I don't think there was a single good English voice in the whole season. Plus those horrendous English names. Amara? Michelle? Barf.

Do yourself a favor. Seasons 1-4 and all three movies are available in America subtitled and unedited. You'll never watch a dubbed episode of Sailor Moon again.

Oh, and as for good dubs, another one I failed to mention was El-Hazard. Mr. Fujisawa's voice in that was PERFECT.

Princess Nine was one of the best dubs I've ever heard. Everything about it was way above the original, in my opinion. The only thing that could have made it better was if they convinced the voice actresses of the two female leads to sing the opening and closing songs like the Japanese actresses did in the orignal. (If they can sing, that is ... ) I miss the old days when they'd translate everything - including the songs. (Record of the Lodoss War OVA for example.)

FLCL is an awesome dub. Not because the English dialogue or the acting itself is all that hot, but because the voices are perfect. I loved every voice actor on that show, even Miyajun's.

I'd have to say "Knights of the Zodiac" is a rare case where the English dub is BETTER than the original Japanese.
By like...a LOT.
Yes, they made some diaglogue/translation changes but that acutally made it work BETTER.

I enjoyed it. ^^

Worst dub of all time?
Megaman um...oh darn. The one where Megaman sounds like Mini Mouse and Dr. Light sounds like Elmber Fudd. :P
It's just PAINFUL to listen to. ><

Hmm....I guess the best I've seen is Spirited Away and Castle in the Sky. I'm surprised at how well Disney has done with the dubs I've seen. They seem to really work to keep it as close to the original as posible, and they hire some great voice actors (Mark Hamil! XD).

Fruits Basket just isn't being mentioned enough!

It's one of the few animes where I've preffered the English voices over the Japanese (not that I have any big problems with dubbing). The script is also pretty close to the original and I imagine that Tohru's voice was pretty tough to pull off with out being annoying.

I feel it's also fair to mention that it was named best dub of the year in Anime Insider.

BTW, I've loaned out my Fruits Basket DVD's more than all my other series' DVD's combined. Mostly to people who normally don't enjoy that particular genre or have never seen any other animes.

I hated the Rurouni Kenshin dub, that I did. It was horrible, that it was. (and Tae's accent? The woodenness you only expect from bad sci-fi? The "battousai the manslayer" (assassin would at least have sounded better, even if not as literal) garbage, the translation of "de gozaru" as affirmation of the verb, making Kenshin sound like he's constantly reassuring himself of what he's saying, and turning him from a superpolite/self-abasing wanderer to someone who can't even be sure of something for one sentence? Butchery. Just butchery.)

Last Exile is probably the best I've heard in a fair while.

Wolf's Rain gets an honorable mention as a runner-up.

(Ah! My Goddess! was pretty well done, too, and I've seen 9 or so episodes of .hack//sign which seem nicely done. Also, Hellsing gets on the list for some spot-on UK voices.)
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.

Yet you voted for the DBZ dub, and it's probably just as bad ^_^. I thought we weren't supposed to rae h dub based on what was changed. Personally I like the 4kids dub cast; Eric Stuart, Veronica Taylor, and Rachel Lillis are all really cool.

My all time favorite anime dub is Magic Knight Rayearht. The TV show, NOT the OVA, whcih I think was dubbed horribly. MKR had all my favorite voice actors in it. Ruby Marlowe, Wendee Lee, Julie Maddelena, Mona Marshal, Barbara Goodson, Zan, etc. It was really great. After MKR my favorite dubs are Slayers, His and Her Circumstances, Pokemon, (see a pattern? ^_^, those all have the same dub cast), and Fushigi Yugi
Jessie and James, together forever!

It's been said, but I must put in my love for the Ranma. I'm not great at Japanese but I'm guessing that Kuno isn't nearly as hilarious in the original.

Big O, Wolf's Rain, Cowboy Bepop and Triguna re all pretty well done. Personally, I think Fullmetal Alchemist's bud is awesome, but I've enver seen the original, so I don't know what all this "changed music" stuff is. REgardless, the voices were great, especially Alphonse's.

I'd say any anime in which the characters don't have Japanese names...
Wolf's Rain, Trigun...
Though I thought that the Gundam series (the one's that i've seen) that they dubbed were good. ^^
They also did a pretty good job on Fruits basket/Furuba too...That may be because I didn't like the japanese...^^;;
Also, Detecive Conan was good...though they changed all the names anyway...XDD

I agree that Trigun was very well done. Furuba was well done acting-wise, but some of the names were slightly mispronounced.

I heard that Kenshin had a good dub, but I can watch no more than a few minutes of it, as I feel they rather butchered the Japanese names. (This is not the actors’ fault so much; they are difficult names, but that’s why I prefer subtitles on Kenshin. That and speech patterns tell so much that just can’t get translated into English, especially with the culture of that series’ setting.)
