I love a lot of the old titles, but a lot of my attraction is kind of a romantic view of my early anime days. Ghost, Bubblegum Crisis, and Appleseed did a lot to shape my impressions of anime and create my love of it. So, in my mind, the newer stuff doesn't measure up even though the animation is technically better and many of the stories are just as good (such as Cowboy Bebop).
Another thing that affects my impressions is the sheer volume of anime available today. In the old days, very little was available – one could argue only the best anime was making it over here. Now, so much is coming across that there are plenty of titles to choose from. Literally something for everyone, which also means a lot of stuff I don’t care about. I think the affect there is I remember the time fondly when I loved all anime versus now, when I only love a relatively small amount. Don’t get me wrong, Hamtaro is cute and all and I don’t hate it, but it just doesn’t make my heart race while watching it like Bubblegum Crisis did so many years ago.
