Oldies vs Newbies

Postby Shinji » Wed Oct 13, 2004 1:51 am

I am wathing Stand Alone Complex. It is a great series and I think just as good as the original Ghost in the Shell, which is my all time favourite. I love the intro song. It gives me chills everytime I hear it. The only problem I have with watching anime like Ghost.. , Akira and some other oldies is that I seem to rate all other anime by their standards, and it is hard to convince myself sometimes that some of the newer anime is just as good or better. What are your views? :hits_self

Well i havent seen akira but i have seen the classic of hentai. Although i dont want to watch hentais now i havent seen a better one than urotsukidoji. Mainly for the fight scenes which are extremely violent, but also very well chereographed(sp?) There's alot of fights between demons in urotsukidoji and they are shocking. I think the art style works for the show rather than against it. The demons look more real than they do in newer shows. It's kind of ironic that urotsukidoji has had alot of bad things said about it but it still is a classic in the halls of hentaidom, which speaks for itself really.

Let's not discuss Urotsukidoji any more, please. That's a series that will attract interest of the wrong kind.

As far as older series I enjoy, I'm a big fan of Urusei Yatsura and Maison Ikkoku, and -some- of the cleaner Lupin III TV episodes and movies.

I could still be champ, but I'd feel bad taking it away from one of the younger guys. - George Foreman

I love a lot of the old titles, but a lot of my attraction is kind of a romantic view of my early anime days. Ghost, Bubblegum Crisis, and Appleseed did a lot to shape my impressions of anime and create my love of it. So, in my mind, the newer stuff doesn't measure up even though the animation is technically better and many of the stories are just as good (such as Cowboy Bebop).

Another thing that affects my impressions is the sheer volume of anime available today. In the old days, very little was available – one could argue only the best anime was making it over here. Now, so much is coming across that there are plenty of titles to choose from. Literally something for everyone, which also means a lot of stuff I don’t care about. I think the affect there is I remember the time fondly when I loved all anime versus now, when I only love a relatively small amount. Don’t get me wrong, Hamtaro is cute and all and I don’t hate it, but it just doesn’t make my heart race while watching it like Bubblegum Crisis did so many years ago.
