what do you think of dubbing?

dubbing.... ::shudder:: the only good ones that i've seen so far is Inuyasha. otherwise.... ::HISS:: i'll take subtitles with the japanese voice actors any day.

Ugh, why do I keep feeling so offended? I guess it's just because I'm a patriot, and I stand up for my wonderful country (mind you, I do truly believe and mean the things I say). I'm just so tired of so many Precoms (Pre Communists) in America (I'm not calling any of you people Precoms, though!! o_O). I get so riled up about people dissing (and yes, that last post before this one was truly a diss. If you haven't noticed, I've been letting the people that just like subbing better slide.) dubbing!! GRRR!!!

No reason to be offended or put off. Anime is produced in Japan for the Japanese consumer. It's licensed by U.S. companies for distribution here in the United States. Just as the Japanese companies are not really giving much thought about American sales, distribution companies here are not really thinking about how this will sell in any other market. Their thoughts are on the American consumer. If others wish to purchase it in the English language it's really their choice to make. And again, there is always the Japanese subtitled track to listen to if accents are a problem.

The only dubs I can watch for now, without cringing, are Cowboy Beebop and Trigun. I would love Trigun's dub almost equal to the sub, except I'm extremely attched to Legato's Japanese voice. Its sorta hard to explain, but his voice is cold in a warm tone of voice (that made no sense...) The English is good, with the monotone English accent type voice, but I reeeeeaaally liked the Japanese voice. Legato is one of my favorite characters in Trigun, so I usually watch the subs.

What I would love would be if CN showed the eps in subs the 2nd time through (you know how they play them twice per night, like once at 12:00 and once at like 3:00 or something like that) Fat chance of that though!

While there are a (very) few good dubs, I'll always prefer the subtitled version. Most English voice acting simply isn't that good. I'll also cop to being an "elitist snob"- I like foreign films, and am something of a purist when it comes to adaptations. Anyways, after a while you really don't notice the subtitles at all, it's almost like you subconciously read the lines and take in the actor's emotions at the same time. It only becomes a problem in some very frenetic scenes, where multiple dialogues get subtitled at the same time.

I'm a dub person.The only time I can't stand a dub is a.when the voice acting is COMPLETELY intolerable,and b.when it's edited.I have found no reason WHY anime must be edited,and when it is,the voices are bad.

^_^; Maybe Moonstone's getting at the UNNECESSARY edits. An instance of an unnecessary edit that stand out in my head is from Outlaw Star's run on Cartoon Network. Gene gets shot (or darted...or something like that) and as Jim is helping Gene inside he touches the wound and goes "WHAT'S THIS?!" The camera zooms in on Jim's hand, and in the CN edit, it's just....his hand. That kind of editing, I agree, is terribly useless but as Lunis said, there are some things in anime, like nudity, that maybe should be left out. (altough in those cases, editors usually just paint bathing suits over the characters)

I agree and disagree with some of you. well, yea i think subs are good but reading them is easy. (no offense) if its that hard to read the subs while watching i think your moniter might be too big, so might as well minimize it for better quality. and dubbing for kenshin is NASSSSTY no offense again.
