What anime should i buy

Postby olorc » Tue May 18, 2004 4:18 pm

My friend who is Chinese is going back to China this summer. June (middle ish) i think. He says that anime is really cheap there. Like 2 or 3 american dollars for a DVD. What series and ormovies should i have him get. He can only bring back so much so what should i have him buy. the limits are specifically about 11 dvd's. The series cannot have any suggestive themes to them at all bc i am totally against that. I was thinking maybe some Miyasaki stuff and maybe Trigun or Lodoss war and Someday Dreamers, but what do you think? :?:

Nothing objectionable (besides the spirits and such) in the Miyazaki films except My Neighbor Totoro (a bath scene, I've heard that nothing is shown though), Rurouni Kenshin (I really, REALLY doubt that there'd be anything bad in the "Episode" DVDs, but the OVAs might be different), umm Fruits Basket (should be alright).

But, what kind of anime do you like?
Heart of Sword's Rhapsody

Money, get away
Get a good job with good pay and you're okay
And all and all you're just another brick in the wall
Shoutin’ in the street gonna take on the world some day
But Bismallah will not let me go
Because I'll see you on the dark side of the moon

Tommy used to work on the docks
Union's been on strike
Bright eyes burning like fire
And exposing every weakness
However carefully hidden by the kids

Who will love a little Sparrow
Who's traveled far and cries for rest
Spare him his life from this monstrosity

I've seen a million faces and I've rocked them all
And if the band youre in starts playing different tunes
We will we will rock you
We will we will rock you!

Yes Miyizaki all the way, baby. But if it's bootlegged, don't buy it. It's not worth crippling out fledgling industries here in the US.
Every year in Uganda, innumerable children simply. . . disappear. These children all stolen under the cover of darkness from their homes and impressed into the guerilla armies of the LRA [Lord's Resistance Army]. In the deserts of Uganda, they are forced to witness the mindless slaughter of other children until they themselves can do nothing but kill. Kill. These children, generally ranging from ages 5-12, are brainwashed into murdering in the name of the resistance and into stealing other children from their beds to suffer the same fate.

Because of this genocide of innocence, hundred and hundreds of children live every night sleeping in public places miles from their homes, because they know that if the do not-- they will disappear. They will become just another number in this genocide to which the international community has chosen to turn a blind eye. They will become, in affect, invisible-- Invisible Children.

But there are those who are trying to fight against this slaughter of Uganda's children. They fight to protect these "invisible children." Please, help them help a country full of children who know nothing by fear. Help save the innocence. For more information concerning how you can help and how you can get an incredible video about this horrific reality, visit the Invisible Children home page.

Well, olorc, I think I'd have to know a little more about you before I could reccomend any anime series. Things like, what titles have you already seen, how old are you, do you prefer sci-fi over fantasy or do you like slice-of-life shows?

Also, I'd check into those dirt-cheap dvds for a few different reasons.
1. They could be bootlegs for that price
2. They may not work in your dvd player unless they are region 0
3. If they are fansubs, the subbing may be very, very bad English, and almost as hard to understand as the original Japanese itself. That can ruin a good series pretty quick

Trust me, they're bootlegs.

Bit of a warning...to be able to watch DVDs specifically bootlegged in China, by most chances you're going to have to buy China's own "special" player which costs roughly around 40 USD. (Mind, I'm not talking about a good old Region 3 DVD player legally designated to China and most Asian countries. This is an entirely different thing specifically made for bootlegs) No other country manufactures it. I'm not saying all Chinese DVD bootlegs need it, but more and more of them seem to be, lately.

(Erm, no, I don't own one.)

And that's assuming you're going to buy bootlegs.

Besides, even if you were to buy an original/legal DVD in China, it's going to be in Region 3 format (unless the DVD is an import), and to be able to play that, you're either going to have to get a multi-regional player or have your (I'm assuming American) Region 1 DVD player doctored into one.

Er, I don't know what your tastes are, but I think Miyazaki's stuff are institutional and a definite must-have.
*Insert witty saying here*

Yeah, I've heard when it comes to bootlegging, China's pretty bad. >.> I'm going with what the others are saying and gonna offer that you're probably dealing with illegal copies.
But if you still wanna hear my vote, Lodoss Wars, baby. ^_^
