Database repairs completed

Postby shooraijin » Mon Feb 28, 2005 9:06 pm

Today the MySQL database server that runs CAA completely shut down unexpectedly (as opposed to what usually happens, which is "just" it running out of resources). This destroyed a number of critical parts of the database, which was why CAA was acting strangely most of today.

Those portions have been rebuilt successfully and statistics regenerated. So far everything looks fine, so I'm going to open up again.

Please, when reporting technical errors, one or two posts is enough. A large chorus of the same complaint over and over "yeah, me too! yeah, me too!" is very difficult to sort through and doesn't really tell us anything. (Furthermore, the particular thread in question was in Goof Off, and could easily have been missed -- either PM or posting in Comment Box would be much more appropriate.) You can also IM us if we're on for immediate feedback. Any of these methods will help us a great deal more.

PM any odd behaviour (other than the usual slowdowns) to me.

So, will this correct some of the odd behavior we've been experiencing lately, or just the erratic behavior that happened today?

If it corrects the "odd behaviour lately" then wonderful, but I was only after the mess today. Nevertheless, I ran isamchk on all of the tables since I wasn't sure of the full extent of the damage, so other things might have been fixed in the process.

This may be irrelavant to what you worked on, but today, I'm noticing that when checking for followups to my messages (on the "all messages by" page), are marked as having no new posts, even when there are. This is something I think started today.

Don't know if it's important or not, but I thought I'd pass it on.

I'm not sure what you're referring to with that option. Thread reply counts seem to be updating normally.

I mean the little "envelope" icons all indicate that there are no replies. It may not be important.

Nothing to report in the way of bugs, but I did want to offer a word of encouragement. You and the other mods/admins have been working really hard lately, not only with unexpected stuff like this, but also, you've been working on ways to make our time here more as bug and troll-free as possible.

For that, I'd like to say thanks, and keep up the good work.

Thanks be to God for His awesome power; to use wicked and fallen humans to bring about His will. And thanks be to God that He would use something as seemingly insignificant as this little site, to bring about good in the lives of His saints. To God be the glory, and honor, and praise. May you guys keep being a blessing to me and to so many others, and may you continue to be found faithful. Amen.
Our lives are but a vapor, let us not let waste our time and breath on vanities, but let us spend ourselves for the Kingdom, seeking a better resurrection.

On another forum I'm on, a couple of years or so ago, a slight error in the SQL basically destroyed every post in the database. (And then(!) we found out that the last working backup was a couple of years old.)

Not really related, but I thought I'd share that. Anyway, good work getting the site back up and running.
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.
