Slow pic loading with DSL

Slow pic loading with DSL

Postby Zilch » Tue Jun 22, 2004 11:44 am

Everything else is fast except for my pic loading. It shouldn't be a problem, because I have a 733MHz computer with 256 RAM, but even CAA Lite takes a minute and a half to load a single page. Any ideas?

Step 1: Find a hammer, some candy, your social security number, all your money and a large box.
Step 2: Send the candy, social security number and all your money to me.
Step 3: Threaten computer with hammer.
Step 4: Beat computer with hammer.
Step 5: Secretly exchange computers with that of the nearest siblings’

(In other words, I have no idea about how to make it load faster)

Guys, I would appreciate non-sarcastic answers, please. They usually work better to solve dilemmas.

I'm not very knowledgeable in the DSL field....so, you might want to browse around this site... you might be able to find a speed tweak..

http://www.dslreports.com/

Hope that helps some..

-for one thing, you may want to try turning signatures off
but that's really strange that your DSL connection would load this so slowly
-I also have DSL, but I don't have this problem at all!

Possibly, you may want to block images
-that would really speed things up

but you should look into why your connection would be loading so slowly
-are you doing lots of things at once when you're browsing the CAA?
-are you sharing your connection?
-are you visiting here while there are many other active users?

try answering the above questions
and making a few of your own,
then you should be on the way to finding out the cause of your problem

-hope this helps
(and sorry for the grammatical errors.)

we'll need a little more info about your DSL, if you can.
for instance, there have recently been sighting of "DSL lite": 1/5 DSL speed at half-price. this may be what you have.
Or, you could live a long way from your CO, slowing your connection, but that's doubtful. DSL guarantees a set speed.
So where are you getting it from? Bellsouth?
Link us to a page that shows your current DSL package, if you can.

It also may be a local problem.
733mhz is realitivly slow, compared to most of todays computers, but loading pages slowly really doesn't have anything to do with hardware.
I suspect a virus, or spyware, or malware: something installed on your computer than is using your DSL connection to send spam, act as a porn dialer, even perform DOS attacks on servers. Try running a virus scan. http://www.antivirus.com proides a free online scan called housecall. If that doesn't fix it, try flushing your DNS cache.
how to do this:
(i hope you're running windows)
open the start menu
select RUN
type cmd
press enter
type ipconfig /flushdns
You've flushed your DNS.

And that's all i can do without some more information.
Make you to watch out for viruses, they really suck.
good luck!

Get a new DSL provider yous!!! Just kidding, seriously I would inspect for adware or spyware, that statiscally is said to be the biggest reason why web pages are browsed slowly...also I would turn off your cookies, until you've found and nullified the virus/spyware/adware.

If it's a hardware issue, then turn off your modem, unplug it..wait a minute than reconnect. Though your modem receiving and shipping enough packets of data from your ISP is highly unlikely. And no, I USED to have a 733, no doubt they're slow but really loading web pages isn't based on that aspect alone.

Hey Zilch,
First off, it's not the processor speed. My guess is it's something else. Here's my advice:
1. Try a different browser. Some are slower than others, or have weird settings that can get confused. If you still have the same problems, you know it's an OS level problem, perhaps even spy/mal/etc ware.
2. There's some good advice here. Download and run "Addaware" to see if you have any spy/mal ware on your box.
3. Let us know what happens. Some of us have been doing this for a while and can help you trouble shoot.

Alright, guys, thanks for your info.

My problem is that I'm running the same connection as my parent's compy, but their goes almost twice as fast. It might have something to do with the network I'm on, but I ain't completely sure.

As per adware/spyware, I run virus checks and I have a firewall, so I'm notified anytime something goes through my connection. But, anyway, I'm gonna try your suggestions. Thanks again.

hmm...well...I love Comcast Cable Hi-Speed Internet, and I'm not sure how similar it is to DSL, but CAA pages on my supery compy do have some waits as well. about...5 or 10 seconds, which irritates me, because i've gotten used to super speedy page loads ::loves Comcast::. i think i'll be trying to do some of the suggestions that the others have made. i have norton anti virus and firewall, so it couldn't be a virus or something. and then i have ad-aware, and i run it occasionally, so that it isn't a problem either. i dunno.
