I'm currently working on making a film, and I'm on a VERY low budget. I wish to use something like foam prosthetics, but can't afford it with all the other things I must allow for. Does anyone know of a substitue or have any ideas about how to have an affect that looks like a burn?

Do you know of any local EMS (Emergency Medical System, ambulance or firefighters) that might have a moulage kit? If you ask nicely, they may allow you to use it on a limited basis; better yet, if you ask really nicely, they may do it for you.
And... second or third degree burn? Second degree is redness and blisters; third degree is charred flesh.

Yeah, a first degree is pretty easy to simulate. Third degree, you'd need to do a baseline first degree, and then consider adding some heaped-up grey matter around it (like scalded, dead skin).
Hope no one's eating anything while they're reading this thread ^_^;;

Second degree was my goal. Thanks! I'll see what can be done.

But, yeah, go with their advice. I would have posted some advice but they took the words out of my mouth!
Good luck to you!

Or you could just get yourself a butane torch and use the real thing...
Wait, that's a bad idea. Don't do that.
