The magic of Google, natch. I figured there had to be others (support groups, Anime-maniacs Anonymous, etc.) ;-)

> Hey. Interesting web page.

Thanks. I'll have to add a badge for this site to the bottom of it as well.

It's been in flux for the last couple years and the server is occasionally flaky, but the account is free at least (and no irritating ads).

Hey, glad you found us too! Ah, google....man I love that site. And hey, thanks in advance for putting up a link. Means a lot to me, honestly. And you've already made yourself at home on the boards, so welcome to CAA! Lemme know if you need anything, and I'll be happy to help ya out.

You know it. If this is who I think it is, I'm still trying to get Mac Shogo to cooperate with the SOCKS firewall. More news as it happens :-)

Thanks for the kind words, Ashley and WhiteAngel! :-D

Actually, I do have some art I'm working on, but it's for the Commodore 64 (this is not a joke). I'll have to dig up some of the concept sketches, which are Flash vector images, and put them on the oekaki or something. It's all in an early stage at the moment (something about medical residents not having any free time, I s'pose ... rrrrRRRR).

By the way, how many people here know each other In Real Life(tm)? I know oldphil and EireWolf do ;) and I suspect ebd1 and andyroo (?), but who else?

Aside from the use of the term... Perfect Choice! I did have to explain it to the wolf, though.

Hey, welcome to the boards.

As for knowing people personally, my friend is Ashley's brother. I think he joined, just hasn't posted yet. So I know kirosho + Ashley. If I know anyone else, I don't know that I know....>_>

You sure you're not joking?! I would love to see this. Imagine ... art you have to program. Lots of nested loops I take it?

nested loops?

What's wrong with nested loops? Ever program in LISP? In fact I hacked the pentagon launch script. It was in LISP. Don't believe me? Here's the last line:

parantheses....

OK! Parens explained...

To those of you who keep PMing me...

LISP uses parens to separate the commands. You see lots of this:

((command)(((command)(command))(command))))

etc... If you had a program that actually did something usefull, it would be several pages of that. Toward the end...

You get the idea.

I am so glad I am not the only old guy here....

I still have the tape drive to my tandy and equip and gave up my com 64 a while back... LOL ...

so can I assume that you guys didn't exactly purchase all of the com 64 stuff you have and were a hack junkie like I was... LOL

( ps. I don't hack anymore of course, but back then it was the way to get the good games...LOL)

Oh I am! Honest! I love reading and learning about programming and stuff - I just royally stink at doing it. (Hangs head) You should see some of my shameful C++ programs ...
And I hope you don't take this the wrong way ... but I also love learning about older technology .. y'know stuff that was out when I was little .. or not even born ...

old guy? If his bio's right he's only two years older than me..

'old guy'

Considering I always worked with kids in my church, I guess the 'old guy' comment is to be taken with a grain of salt.

Then again, in computer terms - I started programming in the fourth grade, so I guess I'm a little older on that note. (Programming what? Hacking games, of course! It's amazing what you can do to save files if you can write your own scriptable hex editor.)

Of course, I got a real crash course in old comptuers when I moved into the silicon valley, and inherited some legacy equipment.

4th grade is about when I got seriously interested in it too, although I'd done some simple things before then (tell that little turtle where to go!!). The TI99/4A's were fairly easy to program espcially if you wanted to do some simple games (they had sprite handling routines built into the language).

Then again, I look at some of my Dad's old computer manuals and text books...

I've already responded to you elsewhere, but I should welcome you officially. From what I've seen, you have quite a bit to offer to our community. Welcome!

> You sure you're not joking?! I would love to see this. Imagine ... art you have to program.

Actually, no, it's cheating of a sort. I start with a pencil sketch or contact sheet, and scan that into Photoshop on my desktop Mac. I do editing and refitting, and then import the image into a contact sheet in Flash MX, where I do line cleanup and convert it into a vector form. That gets converted *back* into a bitmap into Photoshop for final backgrounds and retouching.

The next part is the tricky business. I wrote a custom converter that takes any image QuickTime (Mac media system) can understand, and then goes through it and converts it to a 16-colour palette keeping in mind the restrictions of the way Commodore 64s do screen management. I dump it to a floppy and copy that to the Commodore, et voila.

The programming comes in doing the animation, not the art, since this is quasi-anime (within the limits of what I'm working with). I have some scroller and loading routines, not to mention music. Must have music.

Gosh, this is amazingly geeky, so I'll let a finished result do the rest. (oldphil, I have a better look for the guy character since he still looked too much like Saotome Ranma even on draft #3, but I haven't finished the conversion yet.) Gypsy, are you sorry you asked? Please note that because of the way the screen scroll/animation system works, only the top 2/3rds actually gets used in any one frame sequence. (It can be used in an additional sequence, but that takes a performance penalty. Don't ask.)

Cool. So you do demo programming then?

> So you do demo programming then?

Eh, well. It's not so much demo programming as it is completing an interesting concept, not writing enough support code to fully flesh the idea out, and thus releasing it as a demo.

I have worked on a few demo-type items of limited release, and I've done special demos for cons and things like that. These were almost all on the C64 except for a couple I wrote for the Macintosh.
