Hi everyone!

I'm so glad I stumbled across this place! :) I fell in love with anime about 10 years ago when I was first married. As with most people, it was watching Sailor Moon that got me hooked on the deep characters and intriguing stories that are typical of most anime series.

Now I am a stay-at-home Mom of 2 boys, 4 1/2 yrs old and 6 months old, and my family and I are missionary candidates with SEND International to Japan! Our passion for the Japanese people started when my husband and I were both in college and God called us to Missions in Japan about 2 years after we were married. We are currently raising support and hope to depart in Summer 08 as career missionaries!

The thing that really drew me here was your anime reviews. I am hesitant to start watching a new anime series because I never know what kind of content it may have, so your reviews are a wonderful resource!

I am glad to be a part! I hope to make some valuable friendships here as well =D

WOW! How amazing! I'm actually looking into becoming a missionary to Japan myself. Is there a great need there for missionaries? I'm a college freshman at Trinity College working towards my missions degree. Is there anything you can suggest?
And welcome to the nuthouse!

If u don't mind, this is a topic very close to my heart and I have a lot to share if u don't mind reading it all ^^

The Missionary board we are with, SEND International, was formed shortly after WWII when American soldiers who had been stationed in Japan were burdened with the need to share the Gospel with the Japanese people. Currently, SEND has about 60 missionaries to Japan, mostly in the Tokyo region (which is where we will be going). They have had a lot of success compared to other missionary efforts to Japan but the response of the Japanese people to Christianity is VERY minimal.

The Japanese view Christianity as a "Western" religion and when a Japanese person converts to Christianity it is almost as if they cease to be "Japanese." That is how they feel, at least. Japan has it's own religion which is a mixture of Shintoism and Buddhism and is reflected in the many cultural festivals, rituals, etc prevalent in Japanese culture.

My husband and I went on a month long missionary trip in 2001 to a fairly rural area of Kyuushu. We went to confirm our call to missions. What we saw in that short time was the depth of despair of these dear people who have little or no hope in their lives.

One girl we met had recently accepted Jesus and was preparing to be baptized. Her parents did not think she was serious about Christianity until she told them of her decision to be baptized. Her parents were extremely upset and even told her "Who will pray for us after we die?" because she was an only child. Her family was devastated. It is often a struggle for Japanese Christians.

So, the need for missionaries in Japan is great and there is no better time than now. We recently received the results of a Gallup (Christian research group) survey concerning the popularity and acceptance of Christianity withing certain age groups in Japan.

Less than 1% of the population of Japan considers themselves Christian. That figure has remained constant for many years, but for the first time we are seeing a trend towards young Japanese having a much more positive view of Christianity and even calling themselves Christian. According to the survey, 7% of Japanese teens identify themselves as Christian! This figure was so impressive that even Dr. Gallup himself noted in the survey results that this was an "historic moment of opportunity to ‘ seize the day ’ and bring the people of Japan to an ever growing awareness of the life-changing and life-saving message of Jesus Christ. â€

Yay! More missionaries! And you're going to mangaland, too. Sweet.

Watch Haibane Renmei. That's a good one. Not that I'm biased or anything (see the sig).

lol, I watched that series a couple years ago and enjoyed it very much^^

Wow, I read thru most of your Haibane lesson plan and it is very compelling! Now I want to rewatch the series and I am wondering if I could do the same sort of thing in Japan with this and other series =O

I find it incredibly interesting how most anime series address the questions: "Who am I?", "Why am I here?" and "What am I supposed to do with my life?" in such a frank, honest manner. I can think of several series I have seen that specifically address the issues of God, heaven and salvation.

Thank you SO SO much! I have felt convicted to become a missionary (along with my fiance` who is studying to be a counselor) by God but have yet to fully see where it is He will send me, and that issue has been bothering me for many years now. At first, I shunned the idea of going to Japan because of my passion for it; I was afraid my love of the culture and people would bias my decision and it would not truly be from God. However, I can't help but notice the obvious despair displayed in real life manga such as Confidential Confessions and the first-hand account of the people through blogs of JET teachers. I am beginning to wonder if my passion for the Japanese people is not something to be shunned but embaced as sent by God himself. Please keep me in your prayers, that God may clearly guide me to the peoples He has ordained for me to reach. I will, likewise, keep you and your family in my prayers. I hope to be where you are in your life in 3-4 years time. God bless you greatly and may the fruits of your labors be as numerous as the sand on the seashore!

This is exactly how God spoke to me and gave me a passion for reaching the Japanese people. I had always been drawn to the Japanese culture, even as a child. It grew stronger over time until I strongly felt prompted to tell God that I would go into Missions wherever He would lead me. A few years later I married my hubby and I literally woke up one morning and knew that God wanted me to start studying Japanese. I can't explain it, but I went out that day and bought a Japanese Grammar book and have been actively studying since then! Shortly after, we took that missions trip to Japan and we both knew with confidence that God wants us in Japan.

I WILL pray for you! Maybe we will meet each other in Japan some day soon ^.^ Thanks for praying for my family and I! We know it will never happen without many people praying for us.

Hey Himura_KAORU!

Wow your testimony is amazing!! I will surely keep you in my prayers!! I never knew that the Japanese are so afraid of Christianity! Such a proud people...I really feel for them now..=.='

I have also felt a call towards reaching the lost. But I am not too sure that I am supposed to leave USA to do it. I feel more of a local call to reach youth here in America. I see hurting everyday and it really just breaks my heart to see it.

That's why I want to use my artistic skills to become a comic artist. I want to reach the lost with my words, as well as my art. I feel that God gives us passions and gifts so that we can use them for His glory. (As you are passionate about the Japanese people, I am passionate about art and teenagers)

It's an awesome feeling isn't it? It's exciting and sometimes we just wanna dive right in!!

I am really excited for you! Such an adventure you guys are gonna experience!!

God Bless!! and welcome to CAA!

I've never seen anyone with a nick like mine before now =P I hope I don't confuse anyone Y.Y I made my nick with KAORU in all caps a long time ago because ppl kept mistaking me for a guy =P They just looked at "himura" and thought about Kenshin^^

The reason I chose this nick (besides the fact that I love RK) is because my hubby reminds me a lot of Kenshin and I have a lot in common with Kaoru (especially the lack of cooking skills, lol) =D

oh, I should share this....my love for Rurouni Kenshin led me to make a costume for my oldest son (he is 4 1/2 now) for Halloween when he was 18 months old:

He has red hair so I couldnt help myself >.<

Thanks for the welcomes!
