So guys! The Oscars are tomorrow, and I'm excited! If you aren't familiar with the nominees, you can find them here!

A lot of good movies, actors, and actresses are up for awards this year, so I'm really split on which ones I hope will win for their specific categories. XD I'm definitely excited to see what will win, though!

So who plans on watching, and if you're planning on watching, what are you hoping will win for each category?

A Serious Man and Inglourious Basterds, please.

Although Inglourious Basterds was directed by Tarantino... not Laurence Bender...

Best supporting actor MUST go to Christoph Waltz for Inglourious Basterds. The dude speaks like FOUR languages nearly fluently in it. He totally deserves it.

I always watch the Oscars, and it would have to work hard to top last year's broadcast.

I don't want Avatar to win Best Picture or Best Director. Despite the fact that I enjoyed it I could not help but be annoyed by its cliched plot, which dragged the whole thing down for me, unfortunately.

I certainly hope Christoph Waltz will win for his role in Inglourious Basterds. I also want UP to win something, but there is a chance that Secret of Kells might win something Best Animated film, simply as a dark horse.

This, so much. XD He HAS to win. Languages aside, even, his acting as the detective alone was just flat-out brilliant. XD He and his enormous pipe deserve that Oscar. XDD

Honestly, I'm kind of hoping that Inglorious Basterds wins best picture, but I'm fighting with myself on that because I also really want Up to win, because that would be amazing on so many different levels. XD

Oh, I totally agree. Even though I still need to see Avatar, I was really surprised that it even won best picture for the Golden Globes. I feel like, even though it does look gorgeous, the Oscar should go to something more original.

Like Up. XDD I'll be very surprised if it doesn't win Best Animated, for the simple fact that Pixar has dominated that category for the past...how many years? I'm very interested in seeing The Secret of Kells, though, so if that does win, it'll only give me more incentive to see it. XD I'm also glad The Fantastic Mr. Fox got a nomination. I don't feel like it should win for Best Animated, though I'm leaning that way for Best Original Score--I loved the folksy music in that movie. XD

And I'm not sure if it'll win or not, but I'm pleased by Harry Potter's Cinematography nomination! I was really impressed by it when I watched that movie, so I'm interested to see if it does well at the awards. XD

I don't want to live in a world where Avatar gets nominated for Best Picture while Where the Wild Things Are is universally snubbed.

I just don't.

I don't usually watch these kinds of things... But I'll refrain from a rant.

If Inglourious Basterds doesn't win best screenplay and best supporting actor, I am going to be disappoint.

Also, Up's nomination for best picture was a pleasant surprise. This is only the second time in the history of the academy an animated film has received such recognition.

I doubt Avatar will actually win Best Picture. Why? Because it's sci-fi. Sci-fi NEVER wins anything of prestige at an Oscar show. Not even the Star Wars movies. And I'm talking the part everyone likes, not the prequels.

I usually don't give half a crap about the Oscars anymore, but this year is kind of interesting.

Up got nominated for Best Picture? What, really? I don't know how to take that. It's awesome, but...just didn't expect it to get nominated for that particular category. Very nice.

Avatar probably won't win Best Picture. If it does, I really will completely write off the Academy now and for all time.

Also if Christoph Waltz doesn't win, I will cry.

lol oscar noms

P.S. Is it just me, or did they just nominate the same freaking movies in every category this year? Or do they always do that? I haven't paid attention in a long time so I don't know. XD

Yeah, that usually does happen, mostly because I suppose if a movie is going to win for Best Picture, it should have a lot of other good qualities, too. XD There are always a number of movies that get nominated for the smaller categories that don't get bigger nominations (see Star Trek and Harry Potter), but usually, the bigger nominees are spread across several categories. XD

Also, I LOL every time at "Oscar Noms." XD

Up won't win Best Picture either. No animated movie has EVER won it. When Beauty and the Beast got nominated, Silence of the Lambs got the Oscar instead.

I feel like that's a really odd competition, though. As much as I love Beauty and the Beast, it's on such a completely different level from Silence of the Lambs that I feel like they almost can't be compared. In the case of this year's Oscar selection, though, I feel like Up has a better chance, not only because of the wider range of films selected for Best Picture this year, but also because of its more adult themes and story. We'll see though. XD I'd love for Up to win; it's already such an awesome thing for Pete Docter, as well as the rest of the Pixar staff, to even have their film nominated for Best Picture, but it'd be incredible if it actually won. XD

I don't watch this (especially since I have a Missions class on sunday nights XD)

But... I do look at who wins later.

Unfortunately, I don't think Inglorious Basterds will win. :/ I read an article yesterday and a lot of people don't think it will, nor will Avatar because both directions are pretty much hated by the Academy... SAD! I loved both movies... I just watched Inglorious last night... XD It was INTENSE! (why is the best actor from that show, the meanest XDDD )

I want Monique (SP) to win best actress for the movie Precious Although Sandra Bullock was awesome in The Blindside its her typical "Serious but funny," character. We've seen it before... and I really hope that someone else wins XD.

I want Up to win as well. (although Fantastic Mr. Fox is a movie I REALLY want to see! (for...obvious reasons... >_>)

Any movie about a guy that eats people should win an Oscar! XD

I would like to see UP get it and not Avatar. I like Avatar, but it shouldn't win Best Picture.

That comes as a surprise to me, actually, especially since both Tarantino and Cameron are nominated for Best Director. Here's hoping Tarantino wins Best Director, though! I haven't seen the other movies in that category yet though, so I can't really comment there. XD Also, you definitely need to see The Fantastic Mr. Fox! It was great! XD

And what do you guys think about the nominations for District 9? I'm not sure if it'll win Best Picture or not, but I definitely think it should get the award for Film Editing. It transitioned so smoothly between documentary and movie, and I think that factor alone should be able to win that award for it. XD

What I hope:

Best Director: The Hurt Locker (Kathryn Bigelow, would be first female director to win!)

Best Picture: District 9 or Precious. (Both crews deserve some recognition)

Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz

Actress in a Leading Role: NOT Sandra Bullock

Cinematography: Inglorious Basterds or Avatar

Film Editing: Even though it didn't get nominated: The first ten minutes of Up. Otherwise any of these are very solid choices.

Sound Editing: Avatar

Sound Mixing: Avatar

Visual Effects: Avatar

It looks like I'm the only one here who would be fine with Avatar winning Best Picture or Director. It definitely deserves the nominations, and that would be enough to justify a win in my mind, even if I don't think it's the best overall choice. Originality of story doesn't really play into getting either of these awards, as that's what "Best Original Screenplay" is for.

Okay, probably some disagreeing, but my picks of what I know and why:

Best Picture: Nobody said it yet: The Hurt Locker. It was loudly political, but was serious, dark, and had one of the most unsettling, yet somehow expected and conclusive endings. It was brutally realistic, sad, disgusting, and you felt yourself mentally deteriorating as the days moved on with the soldiers. Loud messages, suspenseful, disturbing, breaking, and powerfully repulsive. I loved it.

But I also really liked Inglorious Basterds, since it was weird, funny, serious, and sort of skirts the line between comedy and drama. That's pretty cool, and that alternate reality as well. Although I couldn't decide how to look at it since it was so awkward. Avatar has no chance, being sci-fi and neither does up, though I think it will win best animated for the reasons later. I can't believe Blindside got nominated, but whatever. Sorry for District 9, even though it was so good.

Supporting: Christoph Waltz. No doubt. He was incredible. Psychotic, but not so much? Conniving enough to be a good guy? What? Four fluent Languages? HUH? Giant pipe? win. But for some reason, people like Nazis and other deranged characters. It's like Ralph Fiennes and Amon Goth from Schindler's list. Or Heath Ledger and the Joker.

Animated: Up. That's it. Even those tragically beautiful silent four minutes of their marriage deserve to win alone. I almost cried at how beautiful it was. And I didn't even know them yet. How is that possible? What's more, the rest of the movie was really good too. It was such a juxtaposition between the humor and melancholy that it made each even more pronounced. Brilliance.

Screenplay: Inglorious Basterds or Hurt Locker.

Music: Up. Sweepingly orchestral at times, whimsically jazzy at others, Or else beautifully subdued and quiet. Also plenty of appropriate, yet varying recapitulations that made it even more significant to hear the same tune twice. it paints a perfect sound scape for the nearly perfect movie.

Not much opinion on much else, but I really want District 9 to win something. The way he was a monster as a human, but a human as an alien was greatly portrayed, and deserves some attention. And then alot of strong commentary on racism and hate. Oh right, and I don't want Blindside to win anything. It doesn't seem appropriate to be here.

I'm wondering what will win...

Historically, this is actually true. The academy leans very heavily towards drama and even more heavily away from Comedy. In terms of Best Picture, anyways.

Yeah what I meant is it's not like the academy sits around and says "Hey let's make sure that no matter what, no sci-fi movies win Best Picture!" Seriously if the academy really hated sci-fi as much as people say they do, they wouldn't even nominate sci-fi movies for that category. Unless you believe the academy purposely puts sci-fi movies into the category JUST so they can snub it as some vindictive measure against fans, and that's just silly honestly.

Aw, I actually really enjoyed it. XD I thought the hosts did a great job (and I don't even care for Alec Baldwin), and I was impressed by the total lack of overt political commentary that's usually so rampant. XD I thought it was pretty great!
