Hari Puttar is about two cousins who are home alone and wanting to stop thieves from breaking in. Warner Brothers is suing them because of the title's similarity to "Harry Potter"

Hari is a hindi(?) word meaning god, as well as a common boy's name. Puttar is a Punjabi word, and it means "son". Son of God. Both are very common words in their respective languages.

Yeah... Warner Brothers is being so stupid about this.

If a coalition of men all named Harry Potter was to rise and file suit against J.K. Rowling and Warner Brothers, right now, that would be hilarious.

I'm going to go copyright John Smith.

I remember an old book called the Legend of Rah and the Muggles (or something similar to that). Anyway, the book is old and when Harry Potter made it big, the author sued JK Rowling and Warner Bros because she claimed her book was plagiarized because of her character names like "Larry Potter" "Keeper of the Keys" "Muggles" "Lilly Potter" and a few other similar names and titles (the storyline and stuff was completely different and stuff though) Anyway, they threw the case out. I have no doubt this will be thrown out too.

Are the studios really this desperate for money? Maybe they should try...you know...making good movies again. That always seemed to work in the past. >_>

QFW (quoted for win); that's awesome. XDDDD

Now, come to think of it, wasn't there some story where a girl couldn't use her own name because the organization she worked for had "copyrighted" it? I know it has little to do with this story, but wasn't there something like this? I think the girl was a golfer or something.

Forget Harry Potter, who owns the copyrights to Home Alone?

[quote="AsianBlossom (post: 1255625)"]QFW (quoted for win)] That happens from time to time with celebrity personalities. Their name becomes part of a brand the company uses to make money, so using that name in another way damages that company's assets.

That may be a reason for Miley Cyrus playing Hannah Montana instead of herself in Disney's show. Disney owns the trademark on Hannah Montana. If Miley had used her real name, Disney would have as much claim to it as she does and more so legally.

I am seriously disappointed. I fully expected to get a link to a Bollywood ripoff of Harry Potter, complete with song and dance, and instead I get a petty legal battle. What is this world coming to, I ask you?

It probably would have happened eventually (bollywood rips off ALL the big hollywood movies and adapts them to indian culture...) until this lawsuit... Now no one in Bollywood will touch Harry Potter, since even a name that coincidentally sounded like harry potter is the reason for a lawsuit.

Seriously... I mean, no one sued bollywood directors for the 45 minutes of "Pretty woman" in Chori Chori Chupke Chupke, or for the Clueless segment in Kahmi somethingrather... Can't seem to remember the other title... It's not like Bollywood is stealing from or threatening the success of Harry Potter in any way, even if they had actually taken from one of the HP movies...

You know, wanting to create a deterrent would be a potential motivation for this kind of litigation. As you said, I'm not sure how a Bollywood ripoff would hurt them, but perhaps they're unusually defensive in general.
