Legendary Pictures has confirmed it is developing a "300" follow-up for Warner Bros.

Variety wrote:Legendary Pictures has confirmed it is developing a "300" follow-up for Warner Bros. that Frank Miller is writing and Zack Snyder is intended to direct.

Miller is writing the graphic novel the project will be based upon, although at this point it's not clear whether it will be a prequel or spinoff. Most of the characters, including Gerard Butler's King Leonidas, died in the original, making a follow-up tricky.

Snyder won't officially commit until after he sees Miller's take, but he's definitely interested, and the prospect of his involvement already has fanboys in a tizzy.

Legendary, which also co-financed and produced Snyder's "Watchmen" for Warners, considers the project a major priority.

"The vision of Frank Miller's universe that Zack Snyder brought to the screen in '300' is unlike anything ever seen before," said Legendary topper Thomas Tull. "We want to be certain that the story originates with Frank and be as compelling as the first."

Another "300" has been rumored from the start, but last week Snyder and the original producing team stoked a frenzy online when they talked about it at the Saturn Awards.

It won't necessarily be easy for the team to repeat their success, however.

Spinoffs of bloody actioners can prove challenging, especially when the main characters kick the bucket the first time out. Warners would surely like to cash in on "I Am Legend" again, but would have to find a way to deal with the fact that star Will Smith's character died at the end. Producers tried to figure out how to revisit "Gladiator," but they too were hampered by the fact that the star character, played by Russell Crowe, expired in the original. A second "Wanted" could also prove tricky for Universal given the violent deaths of so many characters.

How can you have....another 300? The number's going to be all wrong whether it's a prequel or a sequel.

This said at ICv2 about the movie.

ICv2 wrote:Miller is writing the graphic novel that the film will be based upon, but it’s not known whether it will be a prequel or a spin-off
(it can’t be a sequel since King Leonidas and his band ended the first film by attending a banquet in Hades courtesy of the Persian hordes).
Mark my words: No matter what they come up with, its going to suck.
299 of the 300 Spartans in the movie died. The only thing they can do is either a prequel that will expand on the characters of the movie, which will suck because the movie wasn't about character progression. Or they can expand on the war after the events of the movie, which will be dumb because it wont be 300 spartans, itll be more like 10,000 spartans, far from epic.
Well, naturally I have no more inside knowledge than anyone else here, but I'll offer two choices that would almost make sense as 'sequels'. I fully admit these have zero chance of being correct.

1) A film about the Battle of Salamis, which finished what Leonidas started. Of course, it's now largely Athenians rather than Spartans as the big heroes.

2) A film about the other battle of Thermopylae, which happened essentially on top of the original battlefield almost two and a half millenia later, as an outnumbered contingent of Brits attempted to stop the Nazis from rolling through Greece.

You know Hollywood's out of ideas when they want to make sequels of movies in which all or most of the principal characters DIED.

its not really that hollywood is out of ideas (tho i agree, they are... smurfs movie...) but its the fact that 300 was a popular movie. a sequel will be a decent cash cow for them. didnt you know movies are made for making money these days?

I suspect the sequel will be a crazy sort of post-modern mish-mash where Frank Miller and Zack Snyder both travel to the real Battle of Thermopolae and find that Quentin Tarantino and Samuel L Jackson have set themselves up as warlords bent on conquering the world. Or maybe all this is just a drug induced fantasy of three movie fans that are spending time on a boat in the Aegean. Then there's a confusing part where a sleeping Spartan dreams about three American teenagers on a boat, only to be woken by Frank Miller dressed in a toga. They then go to battle, only to realize that all this is the dream of a butterfly. The movie then ends as Homer Simpsons steps on the butterfly.

Just so long as it isn't entitled 301, 299, or any other number. Though "300 II" would be kind of amusing.

The only route they can take with this is an examination of the Spartan who returned. Yes, he is a hero for sounding the alarm and carrying the king's dying will, but to do so he returned, "Retreated" from the field of battle, which might lend him a strong sense of shame. The battle of Salamis is an afterthought.

I don't know about anybody else but I'd watch this movie.

Afterthought? One of the most decisive naval battles in all of History is an afterthought???

Navy men get no respect at all, I tell ya...

And Rifftrax already covered this.

"So this is going to be really confusing if they do a sequel and take the Ocean's 11 approach. They'll have to call it 301:300 2."

I'm outraged! Salamis was really the decisive battle of the war, and even Plataea was no sideshow.

As far as the movie is concerned, they could do either Salamis or Plataea, although Salamis had no Spartans. They could also do Marathon from the first Persian war, although again there were no Spartans there. As an alternative, they could also try doing the Anabasis, although I'm not sure how well that would work as a movie.

No, I've figured it out, guys. The next film will be "700". Named for the 700 Thespians also mostly perished at the same battle. They'll cover the same events from the point of view of the most under-recognized soldiers in history.

I'd clarify my post, but since you people here have a habit of not reading them in their entirety, I wonder what's the point.

I don;t how a sequel to 300 is going to work at all.....

Now Alien 5 should be interesting since James Cameron and Ridley Scott , the directors of the first two Alien films said it would be a great but has to be done right.

Of course it would be nice to see that the events in Alien 3 and 4 were just a freak nightmare and that Ripley, Hicks, Bishop and Newt meet up with some Special Forces and more Colonial Marines and take it off from there. Oops got off topic there..

As for this sequel to 300, I think I'm going to pass on it.

I believe he died at Plataea, there's a reasonably detailed discussion of him in the book "Persian Fire".

Sounds like he'd be a reasonable focus for a sequel to the background of Salamis then.

Seeing as how I didn't see 300 because I wanted to see a historical re-enactment of the Battle of Thermopylae, I'll probably watch this sequel even though I shouldn't mostly because making a sequel to 300 is like making a sequel to Hamlet...wait...

Outside of going the historical route (or comical), they could also do something completely bizzare and mythological. For instance, how about a movie revolving around some sort of hallucination Leonidas has before he takes his final breath? But who knows...they'll think of something...sadly...

There are talks of it, search at Wikipedia and type in Alien versus Predator, the film mind you. You'll see a section that mentions it.
