Reading the book now, I'm kind of excited and apprehensive. Of course, this isn't until later but...anyone want to say anything about it?

This is my favorite book by C. S. Lewis. I read it years ago, but I remember much of it. Man I could totally see demons working in this manner. This movie better do it justice.

Wow....
Now that's gunna be awesome!
I haven't read it yet, but I have read a book called "Lord Folgrin's Letters", written by Randy Algorn though. It's a book inspired directly from the Screwtape Letters, but not a sequel. It's pretty good.
MAN. I can't wait. lol

I don't know; I'm very skeptical about the movie. Arguably this is one of the most unfilmable books of fiction ever written (not the only one, though). There are many ways how they can make this story "filmable" but because epistolatory nature of the book I can't help but feel making it filmable would somehow ruin what make the book great in the first place.
That said, there are still ways to make REALLY GOOD USE of the source material. But on the whole I'm largely negative about this.

I have to agree with sleep, being a reader of the book myself.
But does anyone get a Lord of the Rings feel when they think of this film? And I hope they do it with a Victorian atmosphere as I felt when I read the book.
I'm going to be carefully optimistic about this film, but it definitely has grabbed my attention.

Um... I haven't read this one yet (working on the great divorce, ATM) but what I know about it doesn't strike me as good movie material... Isn't it mostly a dialogue? Like Perelandra and even the great divorce (a string of dialogues), likely with Lewis' shrugging off of describing the way things look... He was really bad about that in the Space Trilogy and in Great Divorce... I don't see how a book like that could be made into a movie... I'll be getting to that next, though, so we'll see...

My thoughts exactly.

O.O
I read this book in...11th grade, I think. But they're making a MOVIE???
I'm not sure what to say, except that I think a lot of people are losing the ability to write new and fresh scripts that we have to go back and borrow a great author's work. Or maybe they thought Narnia was such a success, they're going to try and do his other works. It might be interesting to see his trilogy of Out of the Silent Planet, Perelandra, and That Hideous Strength made into a trilogy of movies, right?

not something I see being made into a movie

Yeah I don't see this as a movie but that trilogy AsianBlossom is talking about would be good.

T____T
And they tell me a Space Trilogy movie would be too boring! GEEZ! At least one person other than me is apparently campaigning to see Fevy on the big screen. Unfortunately it seems ST isn't too popular. -_____-;; I don't see Screwtape adapting well as a movie, seeing that it probably has the least action and characters of any Lewis book. I know it's regarded as one of his best, but honestly it was the hardest one to get through for me. I thought the arguments got stale in it and it lacked any real story - mostly a commentary I guess. Hm... Pilgrim's Regress might be a good movie.
EDIT: If they seriously do a Screwtape movie before ST I'm going to picket outside the theatre. >.< *FURY*

I don't see much out of this movie. We need plots to make a movie work, and as USSRGirl said, it's really more of a commentary than anything else.

Yeah, I just don't see how this could draw movie goers unless they really, really changed some things. Maybe more focus on following the guy Screwtape is trying to tempt around? Still sounds awfully boring to me. Also, just because Walden bought the rights doesn't mean it'll actually happen. My guess is they're just buying up all the Lewis rights as a result of the Narnia fan. I mean here are a few prospective movies that never happened but were advertised to be in production: Bone, Elfquest, Farenheit 451 (no, not the liberal propaganda flick one).

Actually, I'd love a Space Trilogy movie.

While I wouldn't mind a movie. Plantria(sp) would be a little hard to do.
That Hideous Strength would be the best of the lot

Perelandra would make an excellent Solaris(Russian Version) type sci-fi.

O.O Fans... besides me... who don't think ST is boring and especially love That Hideous Strength!!
YOU... ALL... ROCK!!!!!
Ahem... would any of you be interested in starting up an online petition with me and perhaps some ST propaganda art to push for a movie? I'm confident that they could adapt it well, though eh... might need to make some wardrobe changes to Perelandra.

Yeah, all that nudity might make it seem like a porno instead of a religious flick.

XD Unfortunately it would drive away family viewers.

How did I not post here the first time around? Anyway, I'm a pretty typical person in this thread: liked the books, question how good a Screwtape movie would be, would go see a Space Trilogy one.

I'm actually kind of curious as to how they'll pull this off. I can't really see The Screwtape Letters as the kind of book that would easily lend itself to a screenplay, but I guess we'll see. XD

In the book it was for showing innocence like in Eden... but we are far from innocent wouldn't want Lewis' name to become known for porn flicks. XD I was just joking though really.
Join my petition loyalists to the space trilogy!! Join it!!
I already have casting picked out for some of the characters:
Fairy Hardcastle - Sue Thomas
Lord Feverstone/Dick Devine - Topher Grace (maybe a bit too young...)
Filostrato - John Rhys-Davis
Weston - The guy who did Cid's voice in FFXII

Here is a bit of arcane film trivia; the people who made the original 1970's animated film-version of Watership Down intended to make their next movie an animated adaptation of Out of the Silent Planet but unfortunately never got around to it (funding reasons, I suspect).

I just couldn't see this movie working... but it's possible that people could think of a way to make it good.
And the Space Trilogy would make great movies.
