Does anyone like the old school Transformers Movie? I saw it on DVD today and all I could say is "whoa!". It was really good for the time. I really liked it, but I was shocked when
Optimus Prime died
Other than that it was a good movie. There was an s-word which was pretty surprising. Overall I recommend ths movie, Transformers fan or otherwise.

Was it animated?

It was animated by the same staff as the TV show and had big list actors, even Orson Welles!

yeah, it even had judd nelson, the guy played bender in the breakfast club
i also got the anniversary dvd and checked out all the extra stuff on it, it's interesting sometimes to see how the popularity of toys can influence the twists and turns in a storyline

Unlike the first couple of seasons of the TV show, this movie is actually really, really good. Surprisingly good. The animation is beautiful, the voice acting is top notch and the soundtrack...oh, the soundtrack. It is love.

Good grief! I can't believe I used to watch this when I was a youngin'. I've seen it more recently and it was so dodgy. Ack. I should have just left it to nostalgia and not watched it again. I'm definetly going to see the new movie though.

That must explain Unicron's obsession with frozen peas, I mean, robot planets.

Been watching 'The Critic' lately J? (lol)
I also ruined He-Man by watching it again. Gosh-awful piece of rubbish!
My childhood has gone down the toilet...

The movie was well put together and the surprise was huge. So huge, in fact, that it ruined the franchise.

I knew Optimus had died before watching the movie, mostly due to the following seasons being released here before the movie was. But then again I did not really pay that much attention to the series. I liked watching it but it was not all that high on my list.

Actually, yes. And I've also recently dug up the original "frozen peas" bootleg recording where Welles storms out of the recording session. I mostly listened to it to compare The Critic parody.

Right you are. I really like the 20th Anniversary DVD. One problem though: Why didn't they do Scramble City subtitled with optional fan commentary?

They may have had trouble getting the license for it. You can find it on the web though.
I just saw this movie for the first time earlier this year. I didn't know anything about Transformers though, so when...
all those characters died
...I wasn't really affected.

Hey, I thought it was awesome, and I didn't have any nostalgia to affect my feelings.
(I am a big retrophile though, so...) It was so much better than the horrible TV series. If you want to see something bad, watch that. It's good for a laugh.
Incidentally, why didn't you think it was good?

I thought the storyline was a lot better than the TV series. Really, who would include a character like Unicron in a TV series?
The GI Joe movie by the same people who made this movie. They said in the 20th anniversary DVD FAQ that they let Duke live in GI Joe because of the death of major characters in Transformers.

I hadn't been born To watch the Series or the Movie when it first came out.
However when Prime died so did I piece of my soul.
My real beef, with all the original characters (Prime, Prowl Ironhide, Wheeljack, So on and so forth) Is that they died so pitifully (Cept for Prime). During the raid On the Autobot ship Every Autobot crew member is killed in a POINT BLANK fight with The Decepticons...Not one Decepticon is even injured!

It was really sad to see all those familiar faces die, but I-- unlike a lot of people --think the new cast is just as good. The character interaction between Kup and Hot Rod was really well done. Also, Galvatron is way cooler than Megatron ever was.
And one more thing-- I know a lot of people like him, but I thought Starscream was an incompetent little jerk, and was kind of glad to see him finally get his just desserts. XD

It takes a lot of guts to do what they did with the cast of Transformers. Most are afraid to mess with popular characters, let alone kill them. It made for a great, emotional story.

...You don't talk anymore. Megatron was so rad that he completely ignored the laws of physics and transformers into a gun like 1/30 his size, why! Cause he plays by his own rules!
AS for Starscream, I like him! But yeah the bot is all talk.

I like Megatron a lot more too. Man, if Galvatron could've become a gun! But who would hold him? Unicron? I mean imagine a planet holding a gun!

Gee whiz, you guys. It's just a dang cartoon, albeit a wicked awesome one.

Other people's opinions are as valid as your own. Sheesh.
I like Galvatron's character design better. But Megatron turning into a pistol was cool, although I don't know how much it fit the character. Would an evil overlord-type really turn into a tool used by others?

Bout your Megs = Gun, No it doesn't make any sense what so ever. I like to see him as a tank (Such as the "War Within" comic by Dreamwave) But you just can't replace that oh so 80's design.

i always thought they were trying to make some sort of social or political statement by having megatron transform into a gun

I thought that as well! But I don't think it was intended.
If I could say anything it was just a message bout the nature of the Decepticons themselves. Notice most Decepticons are some sort of military craft or vehicle, implying that they are all very destructive.
