Hackers:the movie

I keep watching this thing over and over again. It is a seriously good flick involving of course hackers who stumble onto a horrible plot by someone within an evil corporation and use their skills to try and overthrow the plot and not get blamed for it. No it's not fine cinema, but it is entertaining.

My questions are one: does anyone else dig the movie and two: was it a serious attempt to gain some good press for hackers or just a hollywood thing built on a little bit of surface scratching research about a moderatly popular subculture?

I thought Hackers was a good if underated movie and probably the second option - a hollywood thing. Although it did come out when hackers were getting a lot more exposure in news etc.

total hollywood, they glamorized a good amount of it, especially all the shiny graphics and how there seemed to be no one that actually LOOKED like a computer nerd. But some was kept relatively close to reality (like the guy who "phreaks" on the jail phone when arested, even though from a jail it's not possible)

Favorite scene, when the feds bust into Phreak's house, and then his mom starts reading him the riot act in Spanish and smacking him around, followed by "What are you waiting for? Arrest me already!!"

Though it was released along time ago before the modern topology the internet and global communiations have taken, it still overdramatized certain aspects of technology. But hey, I gotta say it still sports one of the coolest soundtracks ever.
