Rathbone vs. Brett

Postby K. Ayato » Thu Nov 30, 2006 7:44 am

Which one of the two do you think did a better portrayal of the character Sherlock Holmes? I've only seen Jeremy Brett's version for a long time, but last night I got a taste of how Basil Rathbone brought the character to life in The Hound of the Baskervilles, and it's pretty convincing. However, I wasn't too happy with the way he made Holmes a bit more cheerful than described in the novels and short stories. Brett however was more along the lines of the book: distant, but still civil.

Thought I'd include a picture of both so you know who they are.

Here's Mr. Rathbone as Holmes. Image

And here is Mr. Brett. Image

Brett, sadly dead now, based his performance more on how Holmes was actually portrayed in the stories.Rathbone however was the classic Holmes and has his portrayal the basis of Holmes imitators ever since, including Brent Spiner's
riff on Star Trek:The Next Generation. So in a way it is like comparing apples to oranges.

I think you missed the basic point of my question.

No,I didn't.The fact is that Brett's was the more authentic portrayal, while Rathbone's was the more definitively popular one. This can be seen in the pictures of the two.Brett is dressed actually as Conan Doyle portrayed his sleuth(and for the record it IS Conan Doyle not Doyle)the deerstalker outfit that Rathbone wears while popular image of Holmes was rarely if ever worn by him.

Brett wore that costume too, but not in every episode.
