Computer not recognizing keyboard or mouse.

Hey, I'm on my bro in law's computer at the moment. I don't know much about my computer. It's a compaq, probably about 7 years old, runs on XP. Well, I typically don't turn my computer off, I just leave it on standby at night and then get on it in the morning. They (my bro in law and husband) needed my wireless mouse, so I turned it off, and took out the mouse. I just turned it back on last night (so it was off a couple days). It would not acknowledge my mouse. So I turned it off, and got my old wired mouse (my keyboard is also wired) and I turned it back on, let it run through it's system checks, found everything was good. However, neither my mouse or keyboard show any response (my mouse shows it's plugged in, my keyboard has no lights whatsoever). Also, a few months ago my cd and dvd drive gave out on me too. I have a lot of data that needs to get off before I get a new computer (hopefully soon) any ideas of how to fix this? Like I said, my computer starts just fine, loads all my programs, but I cannot do a thing once it finishes. I can't even hit one of those F keys to do a side program....is my computer just doomed? :waah!:

Mmm... this happened to my old computer. It was royally messed up though. I could get it to work for a little bit but I really had to mess with it. Don't know whats wrong with it though or how to actually fix it. I eventually had to take mine in and get it wiped though cause it just got worse and worse (seriously, the whole screen eventually flipped on its side so I had to turn the monitor on its side so it I could view the screen correctly and the only way I could get around was pushing tab and enter)

It may be just something small I don't know but I'd think about getting that new computer soon :D I wasn't able to save anything from mine when I took it in finally cause it was just too far gone and soo many viruses and stuff.

well somehow I fixed it. I took one of those usb -> port convertors for my usb keyboard and it worked...and so did my mouse. I was even able to hook up my wireless mouse. which I hooked up to the usb port that the keyboard was hooked up to. So...who knows what happened.

Perhaps you should back up all your data that you can and do a system restore just to be safe :) Or, check for updates if it doesn't do it automatically ^ ^

I'm glad everything is working now :)

Yeah. When my husband gets home from work (roughly another hour or so), we're gonna hook up the portable dvd burner and take out all the data we can. They're (husband and bro in law) are trying to find me a new computer/build me a new computer. So, it would be nice to have the past 7 years of work on that on dvds.
