Need a good, free mp3 recorder

Hello,

I know a guy who records sermons at his church (He is the sound guy). He needs an audio recorder that will take the sound from his soundcard and save it (40 minutes or so at a time) as an MP3 file. I have looked, but nothing looks really *reputable* if you know what I mean.

Any help is appreciated, thanks!!

http://audacity.sourceforge.net/ is a good freeware recording program. It will encode MP3's if you set it up right.
It's what I used at church for the same purpose.

I second audacity. It handles all kinds of sound very well, contains decent editing and even some effects if neccesary. I use it to do spot recordings of our band, which are decent sounding for the horrible mic I have, a testament to the programs recording ability.
