DVD problems. . .

I hope I put this in the right spot, I didn't know if I should post it in the general or here, but since the people here seem to be smarter. . .
Anyway, #1: when my dvd player (not the computer) tries to play :ashamedly: bootleg dvds from FX, things go wrong. Like the sound stops playing or there are a bunch of squares in the way of everything, or the subtitles turn on and the screen goes some off color like red and then the subtitles sorta stick to the screen. Sorry, but it's hard to explain.
#2: the above problem wouldn't be a problem if my computer's dvd player works, but it hasn't worked since I tried to play a bookleg (another fx brand) on it. Apparently, it doesn't have a decoder, but it did at one time have one since it played normal dvds before. I've done all the things that it said to do, but none of them work. Should I just get a completely new program to play dvds?
Anyway, just wanting some advice or something. well, that's it.
