Reading data from serial ports

Anybody know how to read data from a serial port? I'm programming in C++ and I haven't done this before. In the .NET framework...I guess it works somewhat like reading a file? But how do you open the port?
..actually, I have a lot of questions about this that I'm sure to remember tomorrow. But heck, if anybody knows of a good website that'll show me the ropes...reveal it and you'll be my friend for at least a week. Help!
