I've currently got Fedora 5 installed, and I plan on installing Ubuntu very soon. The problem is which one to download. The GNOME edition is the default, and KDE edition is kubuntu. I tend to be a KDE person, so is there an advantage of getting the default ubuntu version?

Also, I've got an Athlon 64, so is the 64-bit edition the case of "definitely get it if you have a 64-bit CPU", or is it a bit like Win XP 64-bit being more of a disadvantage than an advantage?

And also, it only comes on one CD!?! This seems like quite a cut-down version of Linux compared to the 4 CDs of Fedora. There is also a DVD download version, but it doesn't give much away as to what extra is included.

Ubuntu's philosophy goes with Debian; you only need one CD, and you can get anything else you want through apt-get. That's why it's only one CD. Mostly everything on the CD however.

Doesn't matter which you get of GNOME or KDE, it just has either one of them in the install CD. Prefer KDE? Go on, get kubuntu.

And as for 64-bit, it depends. Few software that's only offered in 32-bit (binary-only video codecs for example) are unavailable in 64-bit install, unless you do some funky around to chroot, but I assume that's too advanced for casual users. Otherwise, 64-bit install should be faster/better/whatever.

LorenzForce is right on the money. Whichever one you get, you can always install the other window manager through apt-get/synaptic.

Personally, I'd say Kubuntu as if you install some unusual window mangaer (PWM is fun), it's more likely to recognize it and enable it in the login in menu.

And as for the one cd thing: In my opinion, Fedora Core is really pushing it with five installation cds. Debian's 15 is just ridiculous. I'd rather just get the minimum needed for a functional system and then download the rest as I realize I need it than have to burn all that bandwidth at once.
