Hey I was just curious if you knew of any sites that offer free chat translations... maybe if you upgrade the chat you could add a translation! See my friend would like to chat with me on CAA but her parents won't let her chat if it's not in Spanish cause thier Colombian!

What... that's... weird... does she know how to speak English? And is she a member of CAA already? A person could copy/paste conversations into a simple online translator like http://www.google.com/translate_t . If she can speak english... that souds odd that her parents are forcing her to speak spanish... I can speak spanish pretty well... but still... o_O

Thats...odd yeah. Maybe they need to check up on her?

Try Google or Babelfish, both are pretty good. I wonder how their going to take LOL or ROFL....

well... she speaks english VERY fluently! But her parents don't so they want to be able to understand what she is saying and what other people are saying!! And the translating by Babelfish or google? It would take forever!

I doubt that there are any chat translators... Babblefish and AltaVista do a single pass of the doccument in question, not a retroactive update every time something gets updated (eg: when someone sends a message)

You think Babelfish is a good translator? Sorry, ours is a bit outdated, we'll have to wait for the destruction of earth to get the actual fish... This is VERY strange... I suppose the best thing is to not let her in chat, then... I understand that, I mean i'd want an idea of what my kids were doing online...

There really aren't any good translation engines yet, actually. We'll need to wait a few years before the technology gets any better (statistical branching, etc).

Perhaps you need to learn spanish. That would be an excellent use of chat, IMHO.

>_>... whoa... trust issues. Why don't they trust her to speak in English. Are they watching over her shoulders to see what she is doing constantly? What do they think she's going to do... download the pentagon or something? :eh:

Oh, and if she's going to be a member of CAA, does that mean that all her posts HAVE to be in spanish and all posts translated into Spanish as well?

Actually, I'm going to side with the parents on this one. One of the most useful, loving things they can do is monitor everything their kids do online. It's not about not trusting the KIDS, it's about not trusting the ONLINE PREDITORS who masquerade as other kids. Let's face it, parents have been around longer than their kids so they may have a little more wisdom on their side.

I'm with Mith here. It is the responsibility of the parents to make sure their children are being safe on the internet. If they can't speak English, they are hindered in doing this. It may be hard on the individual in question here, but there doesn't seem to be much of an option.

don't some of those online translators have the ability to let other server-side websites get them to process the translations? if that's the case, you could take the l337 macgyver way and write a simple aspx app to translate back and forth and write the rest of the convo above. It's what i would do in that circumstance

No just chat! Like they want to be ssure she's not talking with some freak! Like my mom is cheking on me now! She comes in every so often just for the sake! I don't mind though!
