800X600 vs. 1024X768

Postby Mr. Rogers » Wed Oct 26, 2005 12:50 pm

I'm trying to think of layout dimensions for some sites I'm working on. Does anyone really even use 800X600 anymore? Would it be safe to design these layouts for 1024X768?

I usually make my layouts workable for 800x600 as a personal rule of thumb - I don't particularly feel constrained by the smaller dimensions, and I do know that if I was on an 800x600 resolution, I'd be stabbing someone who designed a layout that made me scroll horizontally. XD;

But in the end, 800x600 as common anymore, so it's all up to you.

Horizonal scrolling is t3h evil. Anyone who makes a site with horizonal scrolling should be flogged whilst being forced to correct it

Depends on who your audience is. For the broadest possible audience, I'd say 800x600.

The mark of a good design is that it's not tied to a particular resolution anyway. (Though I suspect someone surfing at 320x200 must expect a little bit of inconvenience, it's not too much more effort to make one's layout attractive *and* resolution-independent.)

shoo's got his paws on the money here. The reason why you're considering whether to use 800x600 or 1024x768 is because you're considering to have a wider audience to view the site in without causing problems (horizontal scrolling and layout breaking etc). In that case, why not make the site so _everyone_ can view it at whatever resolution they want? Heck, go all the way and even make it text-browser friendly.

Even if you don't share shooby's design preference for non-scrolling sites (though I do) you should be considerate of the fact that not everyone browses the web with their browser maximized to full screen. The reason *some* people use 1024x768 is that they want 800ish lines of content and the rest for their navigation bar, or non-maximized browsing, or whatever.

my college has it's computers always set at 800x600 (but it's really annoying... they could really up the resolution to somthing decent...)
