Router is being a... "posterior"

Postby Ingemar » Thu Jul 28, 2005 8:13 am

Here's the story--

I have a DSL connection. We have two compies in this house--one, a high spec desktop, the other, a moderate spec laptop. They share a connection via a router.

Desktop's speed is just fine--in fact, too fine. It's 100.0 Mbps. Laptop, on the other hand, only gets 2.0 Mbps, when before it would get 10 or even 11 Mbps. When I take it to other places that have an 802.11b wireless thingy, laptop indeed gets 11 Mbps.

Thoughts?

First off, how are you measuring this?
"you're a doctor.... and 27 years.... so...doctor + 27 years = HATORI SOHMA" - RoyalWing, when I was 27
"Al hail the forum editting Shooby! His vibes are law!" - Osaka-chan

I could still be champ, but I'd feel bad taking it away from one of the younger guys. - George Foreman

Probably by mousing over the little icon in the system tray, I'd guess. It shows the current connection speed. (For instance, right at this moment, I'm connected at 36Mbps.)

Now, the questions are, in order:
1: Do you use the connection as a home network (i.e. watching anime from the desktop on the lappy and stuff)?
2: Is your Internet connection faster than 1.5Mbps?

If the answer to both of these are no, then it doesn't really affect anything.

If, however, you answered yes to one or more of the above, or are particular about your networking, I'd suggest checking the speed with the laptop very near to the router - with nothing between them, that should give you the speed without any interference. If that's 2Mbps, check your router's settings, if it's 11Mbps, check for interference. You might check your router's antenna, as well.
The cake used to be a lie like you, but then it took a portal to the deception core.
