Yet another reason why product naming by committee is dumb.

I still think they should have called it "Windows XD".

Well, the thing about it is, all these Microsoft rollouts for the next Big Windows Release always take the tack of, "this operating system is going to change your life!"

Remember when Windows 95 came out?

Not even Apple -- the company one equates with product rollout spectacle -- takes that kind of tack with their OS products or even their computers. Compare Vista with Tiger. Apple may be bombastic, but their vision of Tiger changes "the way you use a computer." Microsoft thinks that Windows can change your entire existence. :eh:

Well that name change messed up a lot of OS-Tan ideas for the new Windows... *wonders how peole will represent "vista" as a persona*.

Well, I think I liked the name Longhorn better, personally. Vista is better than some sort of neo-tech name or totally ambiguous titles like "Cobalt Fusion" (just off the top of my head, don't know if anything is name that), but personally it makes me think of credit cards.

I'm not a Microsoft hater like most of the people on this board are, but I can't say I'm happy with their choice.

Funny thing is a while back, MS was having problems convincing people to switch from XP to Longhorn/Vista, because XP worked. Heck, I see no need to change... except perhaps to WinX64 when it's available commercially, so I can take advantage of my Athlon64 3700+

Vista - "Pleasent view"

maybe the chose the name because they dont need to do anything with the logo... ithe longhorn logo looks like a V

anyway, Vista looks better than XP :jump:

I'll probably switch in 2008 when MS stops supporting XPPro

I'll reserve judgement until I try it out, but the fact that it sounds like the name of a credit card puts me off a bit.

I wonder if those two will jump...

exactally why many people don't change their operating system. OS X is steryotyped and always talked down upon, especially by people who are not into computers "Oh Macs suck! Just because!". Same applies with Firefox. So many times ive heard people say "Internet Explorer works for me! Why do I need Firefox?"

Many people don't realize they are grabbing the 1 dollar bill on the ground when there is a 100 dollar bill 10 feet away. You just gotta take that extra, easy step

Why didn't they call it:

Windows Where We Give You Pathetic, Faulty Software That You Will Be Enslaved To For The Rest Of Your Life.

I guess that might not fit on the box....

Hmmm... Am I detecting a small degree of animosity here?

"By naming the next version of Windows "Vista," Microsoft may have stepped on the toes of another software company just down the road in Redmond.

That would be Vista, a business software and services company founded in 1999 by John Wall. He was not amused when Microsoft announced its choice yesterday, setting the stage for a massive rollout when its flagship operating system goes on sale in fall 2006.

Wall, a well-known technology executive in the area who earlier founded Wall Data, is examining whether the name violates the trademark his company has held for six years. He plans to raise the issue with Microsoft, a company notoriously protective of its own trademarks, and may take the issue to court."

the article is really long

<shrug>. Have no idea about how well Mac OS work, but I figure XP is real stable for me so why change for a new system until I have to.

Wow from one lame name to the next you would think that they would finally get smart about this -_- Vista has to be by far the worst name ever it doesn't even sound like it has anything to do with a computer :P

I use Firefox yes... but I never saw much point in the "Microsoft = evil" outlook. I use what is most reliable and right now it's XP
