1337 is Nerdish?

Do you think that using 1337 language is nerdish?

Many people also consider it spamming. Not sure if I think that, as much as nerdish really. I suppose simple things like w00t, n00b, etc are not the worst. Things like...using back slashes and such to write. That is nerdish IMO.

Yes, things like that. That is what I would call borderline board spamming. Its kinda like, w00t=level 1 nerd \v/{}{}-!-=level 10 nerd

If I saw that, I'd think somebody was trying to send me something in a format I didn't have on my computer. (took me a few minutes to decipher that...)

I take it this is an alternate definition beyond the one of sending junk e-mails to people?

why do you consider it spamming? It takes a whole lot longer to get it right than just normal typing. Like the trees in LOTR said, it takes a long time to say anything in 1337, so we only say what is important...

It's not so nerdy as simply annoying. Anybody who takes the time to write like that is... Ah, well.

i consider leet to be an annoyance and a degredation of the english language.
i play mmorpgs and after about the tenth time i hear "ZOmG TiS r0kz0rz toz ze w00tz" (and pardon me l33t i hate it so im not good at it.) and other such phrases i consider pking if i can or just yelling at em.

Yeah, as in pointless and annoying posts; those are considered spam by most Forum Admininstrators I know.

Anyway, as far as l33t goes, I don't mind using an occasional "w00t" or "ph34r" or "j0", but I think in heavy doses it is definately annoying.

Use of leet beyond a certain point suggests to me that someone is unlikely to forge a bond with a member of the opposite sex, and will likely live out their days finding their only companionship in their computer screen. Of course, if your idea of what the opposite sex is is formed in random IRC channels, you probably wouldn't realize what you're missing.

On another note, woot is now the third favourite word that's not in the dictionary.

All this time, in the FAQ when you were talking about Spam, I kept envisioning people posting ads on the threads. I feel foolish now...

Its a good thing I was not drinking soda while I read that. My computer works bad enough as it is. Even though I have not seen the film Napoloen Dynomite, I am reminded of a quote. "Don't hate me cause I sit around talking to babes all day, and training to be a cage fighter" Or somthing to that extent.

well from what i have heard "leet" is actually short for "elite" so in using it you're denoting yourself to be superior.....is it annoying? to me OH YEAH

Definetly nerdish. Words like w00t are fine but I find most other leet really hard to read, a corruption of the English language and just plain pointless and stupid. I can't deciper anything frwl said. So I'm no nerd. =-P

What? just cause I know 1337-sp33k that means I'm a total nerd?

Abolutely yes. Completely and utterly. No doubt about it.

how about having an online gf?

That's definetly nerdy. Unless she also actually exists and is your offline girlfriend.

Is it entirely possible that I have trouble understanding Leet Speak because I have dyslexia (mild)?

PostPosted: Sun May 29, 2005 11:31 pm
by Slater
maybe. Most of the time, I can't understand it when I read it. You kinda have to know what it says in order to read it if it's like my first post here.

as for the gf thing, yes she exists and stuff. We talk on the phone and webcam and send eachother snail-mail and stuff.
