"By the elements," Reisha growled. "Will he ever show up?"
Asher shook his head, squinting as he tried to peer through the rain. "Impossible to tell in this weather. He could be a mile away or right in front of us."
"Gentlemen."
Asher turned with a resigned expression. "Someday I will seriously hurt you, Janav."
Their new companion chuckled. "But I got it."
"Good, hold it tightly. If you lose it after dragging us out here, so help me I will kill you and hang the consequences." He glanced around, then motioned for them to follow as they ventured into the rain.
Reisha slowed till he was walking alongside Janav, watching Asher warily. "How was it?" he asked softly.
"Close. I almost lost my skin."
Reisha shuddered. "How bad?
"Who can say? The Nava are a wily bunch, and heaven only knows whether I saw only shadows or not. They are quite dangerous."
"Make a guess."
"More than fifty and less than a million."
Reisha cursed. Janav glanced back, looking for movement. Difficult, but he was well aware of their tricks, a fact he kept close. Shaking his head softly, he whispered, "They're coming. I can't tell how many, but they are coming."
Judging by Reisha's face, he was cursing in his head. His hand dropped to the hilt of his sword. "Do we have to protect him?" he asked, nodding ar Asher.
"Heavens, yes. Appearances and all. Besides, its our fault he's out here. Here they come." He whirled around, his knife flying from his hand and imbedding itself into the throat of the creature just emerging from the trees. Another appeared, giving him a much better look. It was himanoid in figure, squat and composed entirely of shadows. It regarded him with two golden, malevolent eyes, flexing its claws. Gripping one of his many knives, Janav pushed Reisha forward. "Go, go!"
Reisha suddenly burst forward, grabbing the startled Asher and throwing him over his shoulder as he rushed into the brush. Janav followed behind him, grimacing. They were coming in fast.
Asher, adjusting his awkard position, fumbled for an arrow. Janav, chopping another Nava shadowling, watched as he began to fire arrow after arrow, each hitting its mark despite his jostled position. Whistling between his teeth, Janav loped after him.
Despite their efforts, the Nava were closing in. Janav ducked under one's swing, stabbing it under the arm. "We need help," he gasped, struggling to catch his breath.
"Pointless. Lets facs it, we're dead." Asher fired another shot, taking out a Nava shadowling behind Janav.
"I note you're no more eager for it than we are," Reisha remarked, bashing a shadowling's head in till it merged with its body. Damaged beyond repair, it dissipated.
Janav fumbled for the horn at his belt, struggling to keep the increasing horde away from him. Putting it to his mouth he blew a long planative cry for help. Dodging another close attack, as a group tried to smother him, he blew again much more desperately. Finally the horn was knocked from his hand, and he was being pulled down. Lashing wildly, he screamed like a madman as he tried to break free.
Something grabbed his collar and he was pulled from the shadow mass. He found himself staring into the burning eyes of a Turned, a human consumed by the Darkness. "Where is it?" the Turned hissed, raising a clawed hand. "What have you done with it?"
He managed a grin, holding tightly to his cockshire attitude. "Have what? I was just out for a stroll. You've got the wrong guy - EYAAAAAAHH!" He screamed as the claw dug into his chest; he could feel a finger just touching his heart.
"Where is it?" the monster repeated. Janav's grin was very weak.
"I swear by my mum's grave I don't know what you mean."
He felt the claw in him tense, and waited forit to crush his heart. Instead, it sudeenly sharply retracted. He cried out I pai as he now felt the searing wounds for all they were worth, the blood flowing freely now.
"Where is it?"
He wondered absently how exactly he was going to die. Would the Turned tear him apart piece by piece, or would he bleed to death first? It was a pretty even chance at this point. "Don't have a clue man, many apologies." He braced himself as the claw reached again, towatd his face, toward his eye.
Its head suddenly sported an amazing collection of arrows. Roaring in pain and shock, it released Janav, who lay limp on the ground. Horsemen surrounded them suddenly, killing without mercy. He saw some pull Reisha and Asher free, both bloody and bruised but still alive much to his relief. A horse paused beside him, its rider dropping down beside him. "Janav, hang in there, you idiot child! What were you thinking?" He heard the voice say. He smiled weakily, trying to resist the darkness he felt coming to overtake him. He reached up, trying to grasp the man's hand.
"Nigal, I got it..." and he was gone.
