Quick Question

Just out of curiosity I have a question.

If someone writes a fanfiction about a game, does the game's publisher own rights to that literature? Or can the writer copywrite that material?

I'm pretty sure the game's owner owns the rights to the characters and the stuff that was in the game. To be honest I'm not even sure of the legalities of fanfiction. I look forward to an answer. (I'm not real fond of copyright laws, by the way.)

EDIT-- changed it just a bit

Yes, that company owns rights to game, characters, music, levels, etc. But I wondered if the writer of the fanfic would have writes to their own writing as long as it doesn't just completely follow the game. Like a sequel.

I put this question here because I figured that if anyone would knwo the answer to this question it would be writers.
